Anything I should know about my new used WEGA?

My cousin just gave me his old 27" WEGA. Only disappointment is that compared to my nice, old Mitz, the sound is pretty poor... makes me look forward to fixing my Mitz. But it does have Component inputs, which I have nothing to test it with, now. When my bro moved out, due to getting married, I agreed to let him take the Xbox. ಠ_ಠ Oh, well.

When I turn this WEGA on, it has the biggest, loudest *WOOOMMM* sound I have ever heard on a TV's initial power-up. But then, the plastic casing is very prone to reverberation. I am considering putting pieces of dynamat on the inside because it is so bad. I imagine just the sound from it's own speakers must quake the entire shell. I noticed it has a 16:9 Enhanced mode. I guess that means it's not actually native? Any suggestion for the type of DVD player I should get for use with this TV? I don't want to buy something overkill, but at the same time I want it to actually utilize my TV's abilities.

I think I gave my S-Video cable away to a friend, so I haven't been able to see if it can accept the 480p from my Dreamcast's VGA-Box. (Yes, I said 480p, and there is an old trick to making the DC output 480p, using the S-Video output of the VGA Box. Otherwise, it will simply output 480i.)

That loud "WOOOMMM" noise is actually very normal for the Sony WEGA TV. I have one here and it makes the exact sound on startup. Apparently it's to discharge the static from the display.

You are hearing the degaussing coil. Almost every Sony TV and monitor I've had is the same way. They need powerful coils because the glass is thick, and the small aperture grille wires are hard to demagnetize evenly.

thats true. these are good tvs anyway last many years as far as i have seen. the speakers are usually mediocre though and should look into a home theater solution.

last time i was looking at dvd players the toshiba ones were highly rated.

wouldnt dynamat also increase the heat insulation? i wouldnt recommend messing with that.

The only weakness I've seen with newer Sonys is the picture tubes. They get weak in a few years, and the picture starts flashing on and off from the IK circuit.

Their newer projection CRT's also shorted out frequently, in fact I have a 2004 widescreen projection tv that has a shorted blue CRT.

Sony recently closed their projection TV line, and now only makes LCD's from what I've read.

I've always been a fan of Trinitron computer monitors, in fact now I have a GDM-FW900. But my next monitor will be an LCD. They look so much better than CRT's these days. No longer are they the washed out, dim and fuzzy things they used to be.

I'm only talking about some little pieces of Dynamat, here and there. Practically, the entire backside of the shell is nothing but a huge plastic vent. I mean, literally, everything behind the screen portion is littered with vent slots.

i think the led backlight technology will be very interesting. i am very much into uniform brightness over the screen. I will hold off getting an lcd tv until they bring that to the mainstream.

you will have to apply dynomat to the aperture grille to silence the set.
unfortunately it tends to block the electron beam and does not survive the 500f heat during evacuation.

No, no. Hehehehe! I don't mean the WOOM sound, itself. The plastic shell of this set is very loud, in that it reverberates from the slightest tap, and coming from a DIY audio scene, I'm pretty confident it resonates from even it's own set of speakers. This is not acceptable in my opinion. Even if I was to run external speakers from a stereo, I would not want the plastic shell making any noise.

I hear you on that! LED lit DLP IS out and it's cost is reasonable.

NTSC dies in just a little over a year over here in the US....... 2/17/2009! Hopefully I can get a new TV before then, I don't wanna waste cash on a converter box.

Y - I'm a fan of Trinitron

As to PC monitors - I have gone through an HP P1120 and am now onto
an HP P1130. The P1130 is my second one as the first, bizarrely failed
just a week shy of its warranty expiring (that is, three years) - bizarre!

Anyway HP replaced that and gave me a new one - is that why I paid
almost £1000 for? You bet!

As to TV, I have a SONY KV-M14TU and KV-M19TU - these are quite old.
I haven't used the KV-M19TU for some time but it is as good as new in terms
of pic quality as it has seen very little use.

The KV-M14TU I picked up second hand from an auction. It was listed as
not working but I found this to be cold joints near the flyback. Anyway,
that has worked without any problems for near 12 years - coo..ool.

As these are both 5:4 aspect ratios they cannot be used for widescreen.

I gave my Father a Sony 24LS35U FD Trinitron WEGA 24-inch in sliver.
This may be the smaller model than the one willawake is referring to - dunno.

I gives an excellent picture and has the 16:9 Enhanced as willawake refers to.

As this is a badcaps forum, it may be in the very near future, my KV-M14TU
(T - teletext haha) will require a revisit, service and perhaps a recap.
Almost certainly, those cold and cracked joints will have some siblings...
Anyway, I intend to hang on to this for use with my webcams and video
server (when I get these up) as this can be tied into a alarm systems.

I guess I'm a late adopter of LCD monitors for PC based work, an even later
adopter for LCD/DLP/Plasma technology for TV or Video work.

Any members have views on this?

I've pretty much given up on Sony televisions and their monitors , even though they did seem to be the ultimate back in the late 90's. If you really tech Sony , you have to come to realize that Sony has been a complete market wide supplier of all types of electronics.

I have one of their really old (bar televisions) , can't recall the model # . It's a 50" , 3 tube set that sends the picture to a mirror , and then it reflects back onto the screen. When I first got it , it wouldn't power up . When a professional tech friend of mine looked at it he took 1 look at the huge interior pcb and said " it will cost you a fortune to get running and may go on costing you" Even though he did say that most components at the time were all Sony anyways of some sort if they were any good.

So , I gutted it and installed a working Toshiba of the same era and type to it. Worked just fine and didn't have a single problem since the early 90's. It can project a full wall sized picture but the resolution is nasty. Then , in the late 90's I bought a 22" Mitsubishi monitor (Trinitron Tube) , it too blinked off one day and the repair on the tube was over $500 , so out it went.

These days it's not the top of the line that is making heads turn , it's the cheaper brands that are concentrating on reliability and cost of repairs. If the manufacturer can keep you running , it can keep you buying their products. There are , after all some people having the exact same problems after dishing out as much as $4000 on a plasma or lcd tv , as someone who spent less than $1000.

The Toshiba 42HL167 is an hdtv lcd that has all the bells and whistles that other newer tv's have , yet the price is far more reasonable. In fact , right now for the same price as the 2007 model you can choose a 2008 model. We are talking full hd with 1080p , while the new standard is about to change in Feb./09. Consequently some new tv's are coming out that only support 1080i (not 1080p) with the same pricetag.

The 42&47HL 167 Toshiba are chock full of features , I should know I have a 42HL167 now. While their cousins : the 42&47HL67 falls just short for no apparent reason due to the 1080i issues.

I would say if you want to spend money on a tv soon , now is the time to buy the Toshiba sets ( 42HL167 REGZA ) is like having another computer with your tv while it also allows it to be a monitor as well.
