Sony Bravia KDL-32ML130 - No Picture, Has Backlight & Audio

Today I came into the possession of a Sony Bravia KDL-32ML130. My mother was doing some shopping at Good Will and picked up this unit for cheap. She dropped it off at my house earlier this afternoon after finding out that it does not work.

I have a small background in repairing electronics as I've always had an aptitude for fixing my old game consoles, televisions, and arcade machines. However, I have never had any real experience in fixing anything too complex (meaning anything beyond replacing capacitors, fuses, and cleaning up solder).

After reading some similar threads on this forum, I feel it's safe to assume the problem is probably a bad component on the T-CON. However, I have yet to see a picture of one on this forum that looks close enough to mine to start testing and changing components. I'd like to try to fix this unit before giving in and buying a new T-CON board. More/better pictures can be added as requested.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nice find there. I wish there were goodwill stores around here which sold broken electronics - most shops won't even touch working stuff! I've repaired the same T-con in a different TV with the same symptoms - no picture - but backlight and sound okay.

A common failure is the device F1, which is a tiny fuse. It blows often without apparent cause. Do you have a digital multimeter? With the TV off (and unplugged), set your meter to 200 ohms, put the red probe in the Volt/Ohm jack and the black in the COM jack, and record the reading when probing across the fuse. If you read nearly zero, the fuse is okay. But if your meter reading doesn't change, it is likely the fault.

I'm definitely not getting a reading from it. What is that type of fuse called and where could I find a replacement for it?

It has a P or lower case d on the top if that matters.

This is a Bourns 3A fuse but not sure which you need of these.
        Perhaps Tom will advise better

EDIT Sorry it might not be 3A I have read that a p = 3amp but looking at the bourns datasheet
it is only 1.5 so I am a bit confused - will try and look elsewhere.

If we can get the panel P/N as printed on the sticker, then we can look up the spec of the LCD panel assembly which will provide the current draw and voltages of the T-CON and the backlights inverter board.

            It's a Samsung LTA320WT-L06; the datasheet is here: https://cdn.badcaps-static.com/pdfs/...fca4ded7ea.pdf.

Page 10 says max draw is 2.2A from 5V. I would specify a fuse 2x that rating so about 5 amps to prevent nuscience blowing.

I had that website on my Fav, it is great. 5A is about right, I use through hole Littlefuse PICO II fuse on my T-CON repair.
Sony uses CHI-MEI screen, what a joke, all SONY had to do is to build the Power and main board and called it a SONY TV, it does not even use its own LCD panel.

Great! got it now - there is no standard marking one standard was that p =3A which would fit with Toms 2.2A finding. Bourns apparently used the same letters but for different values. I see that littlefuse has now adopted the rather sensible idea of putting the amps and voltage on the markings.

Yeah, I know. Even Samsung don't use their own panels any more; I repaired an otherwise nice 40", but it had terrible motion blur. You could see a trail for at least 50ms, a moving hand would ghost like they were an actual ghost. Cause: Chungwha panel. Now I know why people complain about LCD blur. On a decent Samsung or LG panel, it's essentially unnoticeable. Perfect, no complains. Almost identical to plasma (I did a 42PC1D comparison to 42LC46 and I couldn't tell the difference in motion between the TVs.) But cheap panels really suck. And the Chi-Mei panels get mura after 3-4 years, I have had three TVs with the same problem and the same Chi-Mei panels.

At least the 37" LG I have for repair seems to use an LG Philips panel which is pretty good and that 32" Toshiba had an LG panel too... also the Atec 42" had one (I'm on a roll here, haven't had an LG based TV for a while!)

Only good thing about Sony is the decent caps and service manual.

Thanks for all of the advice. Unfortunately I'm still lost as far as finding out exactly what kind of fuse I need to buy to replace it. I've always done it based on looks and ratings, but I know that's not a very safe or effective process. Could you tell me what type of fuse, specifically, I should be looking for in my purchase? It would be much appreciated.

                      Here's a good fuse.
                      http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...32CT-ND/686745

It's tiny... Perhaps practice desoldering on another board first like an old motherboard or sound card.

Thinking about this, my dad probably has that T-con from the Crown TV I stripped for parts due to a broken LCD. If you have difficulty replacing the fuse I'll ask him about it.

To make it easy, you can just lay the new fuse right on top of the blown fuse and just solder both ends to the old fuse's end terminals, that way you do not have to remove the old blown fuse, that is how I do it. I would order more than one fuse just in case you mess up.

Soldering shouldn't be so bad, but I do appreciate the help. I'll let you know how the repair goes when i get the fuses in. I'm going to see if I can source them here in town first, but if all else fails I'll order them online. Thanks for all the help!

Do you have any 1/4 watt resistor, 0.22 Ohm, you can use that in place just to test.

Sorry to necro a thread from 5 months ago, but I just wanted to say that it was indeed a bad fuse at F1. I just want to take a moment to thank tom66 as well as everyone else in this thread. It only took 2 of the 5 fuses I ordered to get it in place set properly.

I wish the pictures were of better quality, but they were taken in a low light situation with an older generation iPhone.

I'll be posting again soon with at least 2 more issues that I hope can be resolved!

I soldered 2 leads off both ends of the dead fuse and used a regular buss fuse, soldered the wires on both ends of the buss fuse, wrapped it in electrical tape and wire tied it to the harness next to the board, Bam! its working again... Thanks for your tips I worked in an arcade for 16 years doing repairs I had to improvise for parts all the time to keep things running

                                      Hi All,

I experienced the same issue with my Sony Bravia KDL-32ML130. I found that it was the fuse on the T-con board. I ordered the one you listed (Qty - 4):

                                      http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...32CT-ND/686745

Anyhow I checked the first one before installing with my multi-meter and did not see a short through it. Checked a second one but no difference. Installed the first one in a "piggy back" which I have done before with no joy. Long story short I ohm checked all of the new fuses and there was no continuity.

I finally on the third one removed the original fuse so as to have the new fuse directly connected. I could red 5 volts on the bottom of the fuse but nothing a the top side. I decided as a test to put a small piece of copper between the two solder points and it now works.

Any idea on the fuses? I want to put a fuse in as that is what is needed for circuit protection but these did not seem to work from Digi-key.

                                      Thanks in advance,
                                      Nano
