Default Inserting Images in your post

Badcaps Forums has the facility to host the images you would like to show in your posts. We would appreciate if you would use this facility rather than hosting your images offsite.

Why is that?

- when we host your images we can be sure that they are available when your post is being viewed. there is nothing more annoying than seeing a thread without images that people are referring to. people view the forum threads from years back, things change and you may wish to delete your images from your webspace later or the free host you are using may go out of business. it is important that we control the images to have a better viewing experience for the members.
- when a thread has images from different hosts loading at the same time, the browser will load the thread more slowly.
- when a thread has an image from a slow or not responding host included in the thread, it is annoying when the thread is not completing loading.
- some hosts have bandwidth limits on the images and it is annoying to see "bandwidth exceeded" instead of an image in the thread. yes badcaps will consume a ton of bandwidth from your free host.
- if you host images offsite then mods have to correct and upload them to our servers and this is tedious.

Does badcaps own images we upload to its servers?

no but should you want to delete your images later we wont. if they are objectionable then they will be removed quickly by mods in the first instance. i doubt if you will want to anyway. we are just interested to make sure the threads have the images available every time someone sees the thread.

Does badcaps have a problem with bandwidth?

no at the moment we are fine. you are most welcome to host your images with us.

What size images should i put in the post?

it depends what you are showing. generally 600-700px wide, 400-500px if it is not very interesting. basically if the page is scrolling at typical tft resolution of 1280px wide then your inline images are too wide.

it is nice to be considerate to people viewing the post so you could load some images inline to the post but leave some or a big one you want to show as not inline so the viewer can click on the thumbnail at the bottom of the post if they are interested to see more detailed pics.

some people are still on dialup but i dont think that we should design for them. but if the thread is loading slow on 384 dsl i would say the amount of images placed inline are excessive. anyway dont worry about that, mods can alter the post lately as long as they do not have to edit your image sizes or upload offsite hosted images to badcaps servers which is tedious.

it is nice if you crop the images so that there is not too much wasted space around the interesting bit. like a psu where 60% of the image is background - that is not good.

how do i attach the images then?

well when you start your post, click on "manage attachments" below where you write the post. If you cannot see that then contact a moderator.

the "manage attachments" window will pop up and you can click browse and then browse and select the image you want to post on your hdd. if the image is too large you will get a warning and not be able to upload it.

once the image is uploaded you will see its filename in the "current attachments" box. if you did not intend to load the image inline to the post (inline means you want it to load fully into the post automatically) then just leave it and go back to finish the text of your post. in that case it will be a thumbnail at the bottom of your post.

if you wanted to load the image inline then right click on its link and select "copy link location"

then paste it where you want it to appear in your post. at that point it is only a link to the image so select the link

then click on the image icon and the link will become an inline image link with IMG tags at the start and end of the link. then it will load inline no probs and you can repeat this pasting the links and making them inline image links for each image you want in your post

As a moderator Will I have to ask you, TC, or any mods;
If it's late, 2/3/4 eastern standard, and a dumbass makes a rediculous post, like I never do, is one of you always monitoring, does this disturb the forum.
Certainly I would not be posting any late night stupidities but if I did? does a ding go off? Do you curse and say dam it's him again?

I can't imagine anyone would want to remove your comments - they're usually fantastically humorous. Everyone needs a morale officer, after all.

UPDATE

The method mentioned in this thread is obsolete.

The highlight and click method no longer works with the new forum software.

The correct method is to copy the link, click the picture icon, and in the window, paste.

Another note- if you find an offsite image, the upload attachments" menu has an "upload from URL" option.

(Willawake- you might wish to update post #1...)
