No sound, USB, or webcam on Satellite L505D-LS5006

I am trying to fix a laptop for my friend and I have tried everything I can think of and am at a loss...

I have reinstalled using windows 7 x64 and x32 (even tried XP x32) There are no "Universal Serial Bus controllers" listed in device manager, nor any webcam. Audio does at least show but says code 10 device cannot start (I have tried every driver I can find) I checked the BIOS and it was version 1.10 so I figured it might be a bad flash or something so I downgraded to 1.00 via bootable cd-rw and still have the exact same problems....

Is the hardware just fried or something?

    Thanks.

after Browse through google i learned that it is the southbridge chip the problem
.desoldering this chip and reballing may solve the problem

You may have some temporarary success by "reflowing" the chip with a hot air gun. You will not be able to remove and replace without specialised equipment though. The equipment is too expensive to buy for a one off repair, maybe there is someone where you are who can do it for you. Bon chance!

that laptop is not that old, i would check when it was bought and write a letter to toshiba pointing out fault, who knows they might decide to replace it. In the UK we can claim up to five years after the unit is bought, we have the standard guarantee of 12 months but consumer law states that expensive goods have to fit for purpose and have a life expectancy of up to 5 years.

Toshiba has been no help, the l505d in general has that same issue. On the toshiba board, people have been contacting the BBB, and general commiserating... but the company isn't taking action, reflowing will work, but why? it'll just fail again.. it's definetly the southbridge, no sound no usb no web cam, card reader all the sub functions.. it's a shame too.. that case is great to work on.. so roomy so well put together. I have a l505d gs6000 and just came into a s5965 about a week ago.. that one... wont POST, cmos battery connection points have lost the copper pad.. that'll be fun to get too when I get working on it.

I tried reflowing my L505D-LS5010 with a hot air rework gun and had no success. I still have no USB ports, SD card reader, or audio. And even if it did work, it'll just happen again. I think it might be due to poor design. The motherboard is positioned with all the main chips facing downward. Gravity and heat are probably what's helping the SB chip work itself loose.

Though I'm not too sure yet that the SB is the problem. When you plug something into a usb port (flash drive, ipod, etc) the activity light comes on for a few seconds. So at least there is power still going to the ports. I'm going to take a closer look at the board when I have more time.

BTW, I've seen similar problems on a lot of Toshibas satellites that start with the letter "L" (L305, L500, L505...) Stay away from these stinkers.

There are so many threads about this issue with the L505D series on their own website, you couldn't imagine. I've had the same problem starting in August 2011, two months out of warranty. I stumbled on something this week that fixed it. I powered up with the power supply, then unplugged the power supply and shut down while it still had some charge. I powered it back up later without the power supply, and low-and-behold, my audio device is recognized and my USB ports are working. I then plugged in the power supply, and so far two days later, its still working. If it stops again, I'll do my little trick again. Try it ... can't hurt.

i know this thread is kinda old.. came across this thread as i was doing research and joined to share my experience. i just received a donated l505d-gs6000 with no sound and usb's not working... did some research and found that L4519 CAP has either broken loose or is completely missing. And the best reason I can figure, is that part of the touchpad components/plastics come into contact with L4519 and break it loose or knock it off the board causing no sound/usb to not work Replacing it or resoldering it seems to solve the usb/sound problem that I have experienced.

I can't seem to identify the cap to order to replace it.. so i just soldered the connections together and sound and usb are back working.... signed up for this forum just to give my experience with this problem and maybe you guys can find the schematics or cap that replace the L4519 CAP SMD? there is a picture of the cap on toshiba forums located here on the last page

From what I have found (reflowing the southbridge - temp fix at best) and all that I've researched... this is the only solution that I've come across that is a definite and verified fix to the problem. I'd like to kiss the guy but I'm not gay so I'll just give the "whats up" nod from across the forum...

but seriously, try this solution, check the l4519 CAP if that doesn't work, dont' fall into the trap of "restore to factory" or the popular "Toshiba/Microsoft is doing this on purpose and its a indication that they have really lost it" that seemingly every other board falls into and trouble shoot the mobo. There is documentation available now that wasn't a year ago like the service manual complete with board layout and testing procedures!

Thanks for finding the l4519 Cap solution and recognizing the pattern!

people, people, people... redirect all forums to this post as i will update the information as i solve PART(i will explaine what PART means) of this issue.

my history... graduated in 2004 with a bs in network infrastructure support...
                                    works for HARRIS CORP.

                                    my lap top:

                                    model: Toshiba Satellite L505D-LS5006
                                    model year: 2008
                                    original OS install: Vista
                                    platform: 64bit AMD

ok first off i have discovered two issues exist, and they are being merged as one issue.

issue one: south bride mechanical failuer, results due to the shitty air management for the level of operation heat, the south bridge literaly melts itself.

defined by: one day your usb and sound does not work.

                                    issuew two: software.

defined by: you changed your operatiing system, now your sound, usb ports, sata port, and web cam do not work.

proof: i upgraded my laptop from a 320gig hard drive, to a samsung 500g solid state drive, and upgraded the operating system from Vista ultimate 64bit to w7 home premium 64bit.

with the samsung 500g hardrive with w7 installed in the comeputer, my usb. sata, sound, and web cam do not work.

i take that hard drive out right now and put the mfg's (toshiba) hardrive in: 320 gig hard drive vista, everything works fine in the laptop.

so now i ask you. did you change your OS? or did your shit just stop working.

i can not help you if your s-bridge is broke as that is not my issue.

now i can help you IF you changed your OS.

when you change the OS to Windows 7, w7's default applications and drivers do a great job with everything except w7 does not install the product software or drivers dealing with the web cam, the usb, and the sata, but it does install the wrong information for the sound. this is why under management tools you see the yellow icon for sound and nothing else.

to fix this issue you must go to the mfgr web page of the usb sata sound and webcam. "NOT TOSHIBA" toshiba provides drivers not install software.

                                    lets start with the sound:
go to Realtek web page using this link...

                                    http://www.realtek.com.tw/DOWNLOADS/...&GetDown=false

...and follow Realtek's software installation directions. then update drivers for this device.

i do not have the webcam and usb and sata solution yet. when i figure it out i will respond, but i hope this is enough direction to point most in a good direction.

                                    webcam:?

i believe usb and sata is a moterboard software issue, i will go to the motherboard mfgr and see if anything helps.

                                    usb: ?

                                    sata: ?

                                    good luck people,
