Speedstream 4100 ADSL Modem and a Linksys WRT54

The internet at my friends place went to crap tonight with tons of packet loss and other generally nasty things like brief total outages of service.

It does this OFTEN.....I looked at the modem and remembered an old thread on here about Speedstream modems and then grabbed the screwdriver, the blue ESR meter and the soldering station.

The modem had a G Luxon 6.3V 1000uF cap with no bulges....but 0.23 ohms ESR. It got changed out with a late date (early 2009) Nichicon HM measuring .03 ohms.

For good measure, I cracked open the WRT54 router and found two G Luxon 25V 220uF caps measuring 0.26 ohms. These got changed out too, the PSU input has been changed to UCC KZE 16V 470uF (fine since the PSU input is jsut 12V), the regulator output is a Nichicon HZ 470uF 16v.

As you can see, we are back online tonight! Lucky for my friend that I had my bag of caps with me.
Working...
