Very interesting! What kind of tape is that exactly? I thinh i've seen it couple of times in laptop mobos.

One question. Is desoldering wick of any use with SMD's?

Looks like Kapton to me. Kitchen foil will also do the job, cover up everything you want intact.

Desoldering wick is very useful for SMD work. I sometimes find it is easier to flood the pins of a SOT223 with solder so they are all bridged, then wick it all up so the three pins are loose, then I heat up the tab and try to lift it.

Yes, Kapton tape. It is trademark of Dupont. You can find it widely available on ebay. I got 100ft of the widest tape I could find with the thought that I can always cut it into strips.

Aluminum foil works as well, but I don't know how to secure the foil down to the board and not have it blow away.

            Any update with this?

I did a total re-cap of the PSU and logic board, but I'm still stuck witht he same symptom... backlights come on but no picture. Can't see the OSD either. It's not a white screen, just no picture.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

              Hey man.

Nah, no update. Still waiting for the damn voltage regulator.

Did you try those 4 cables that go to the PSU? Are they OK, power coming thru clean? If the backlight is on, then logic board is letting the power through, but signal from the video card is not being trasmitted. Maybe the buig chip itself has gone bad?

that would be great! I tried to order them but no one will work without paypal, even though some accepted to send to serbia.

One store here sent me the response that they'll make an order "but only if i take 100 or more because it too much of a hassle to order just a few for me". So I'm stuck basicly

                          YAY!!!

I changed the 1.8v regulator on the logic board, fired it up and I saw the Flatron Logo, and then the PC input! Woohoo!

                          My first SMD repair!!!

I removed the regulators with a 60w iron if anyone is wondering. It takes a bit of finesse, but it is possible.

My replacement regulator came from an old Acer logic board. It's an STMicro part "LD18A", almost like this.

Thanks everyone for the help. There is also another good thread for this monitor here, if anyone is interested.

These regulators cost 6-10 cents each in volume, so 100 could be worth it if you can get a good price...

@mockingbird: congrats man! Why oh why can't i find one to salvage?

@tom66: unfortunately price is not so good it goes to about 30 euros for the 100 and that's more that this monitor's worth i know it souns silly but thats the prices here. Nothing to do about is but whine at forums like these

OK, at least we definitely know that 1.8 reg is a bad boy so the search continues!

Actually I knew I had one because I have a very similar PSU/logic (ILPI---) from an Optiquest. I didn't take it from that one partially because it would be difficult to get to with the iron... Then I found the Acer logic board and it was really easy to get to... Looking around my house I see them on all kinds of components. The thing is, there are like a million different names for this regulator. And you have to make sure to get the 1.8v version. Look on spare AGP videocards, you might find one there.

I received 10 from China for $1 + free shipping. I fixed an Acer lcd that has been sitting in my basement for about 14 months with a bad 1.8V regulator.

@bocca, If you can't find one in the next few days, PM with your address. I think sending a letter to your country is only $1.80 CDN. I'll send you a couple.
