Thanks guys, after reading up on your forum, I have now been able to repair this set that i would normally have written off as a faulty panel.
the tv came in with a dim display, there was cockroach faeces along the inside of the cabinet, so i decided to open the panel and have a look. Photo 1 shows the roaches, however i dont know if they caused the problem. Photo 2 shows the lamps burning dimly with the fourth lamp from the top burning purple.
Photo 3 shows the lamps now burning brightly after having replaced the purple lamp with one from a scrapped panel. (you can see the fourth lamp down seems slightly longer.).
It was a bit awkward handling the light defuses/filters between the lcd film and the lamps, but I managed to make a successful repair. Thanks once again.
