First, in the bios, make sure the boot order has the cd drive first, have a known good cd drive, make sure your cd is in good condition, make sure your jumpers for your drives are right, on the right connectors on the cable, and make sure your hard drive is good.
Did that and even used the CD ROM DVD ROM burner from my baby.

Anyways, if they are too big to upload to badcaps (manage attachments when making/editing a post) I usually open up paint and reduce them (Image->Stretch/Skew, usually 25 in horizontally and vertically, makes them 1/4 the size.) Save as .jpg and then upload it.
ubuntu? good choice. i hope you picked 9.04. very fast. i live by ubuntu. my dad's d530 is dualbooted with ubuntu as an option. runs fast with no extra configuration.
play with it, especially the add/remove programs app. you can find everything there. one note:
if you install xsensors, to enable it:
open up applications/accessories/terminal
type in : sudo sensors-detect
press enter
enter password, press enter
follow instuctions
if sensors deteced (never istalled th app on my dad's machine), then coniue following instuctions ansering yes to all other questions
when all is done restart and you have sensors!
if you installed that, post wheter it worked so i know if it will work for my dad
I can't remember what it is called, but its a linux type super-stable OS that can run any windows app on it no problem. They even made it kind of look like windows.
