I prefer to zero drives from within a running Windows. I have one running all the time so why not use it. Plug in, zero, eject. USB or SATA, I can zero whatever you like (you like)!
I like Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows. Easy, fast, and reliable. It doesn't work right with RAID drives present so I use GDISK32.
Just 1 pass of zeros. It's sufficient for all but high security government data, and no, your tax returns aren't. No one will pay a plugged nickle for those!
