The Compaq/s that I had this issue with were pretty much a PITA. I had to reinstall the OS and software to 6 of the same model at the same time without any restore cd's (some of them had non functioning cd drives too), so I thought I'd just use imaging software to take an image of one and restore it to the rest.
To cut a long story short, if you format the drive on another pc before installing it, it won't be recognised. The new drive MUST be formatted by a matching laptop, or you'll get either a PXE or system boot disk error (can't remember which one, it was a few years back).
