    Are all Caps the Same?

Hello I'm new here. Let me explain why I'm here and then get back to my question.

Well, my 1992 Ford F150 is not working and after searching the net for some ideas, the common cause for my trucks symptoms seems to be the onboard computer (EEC/PCM). I pulled my computer and sure enough there are 3 caps on the board that appear to be bad (easily move to the touch and burnt marks at solder joints). My research has shown that this seems to be common cause of failure on these computers. I can't see a manufacturer of the Caps but two of them are 47uf16v105 and one is 10uf63v105.

Back to my question "are all caps the same?". Well I'm not talking about the Manufacturers, I've seen the bad cap list and good cap list. All I see out there are caps for motherboards and nothing specific to automotive. Will these caps for motherboards last in a car computer that gets jolted around?
Will it make a difference if I use low ESR caps or not? I can't find low ESR caps in the sizes I need.

One last question. Do you believe the bad caps have affected the programming of the computer or there should be no effect at all?

Thanks in advance for your time and expertise.

    Gary

I added photos as requested. Sorry they aren't good, taken with my IPad.
Further inspection revealed they appear to be made by Nichicon.

        10uf63v105 #A9150

I can also see "PC(M)" on the side of each.

Ok 63volts it is - what size were you looking for 12mm x 5mm seems the norm.
Are there any letters on the other side where it says nichicon that will denote what series the caps are. From that we may get the ESR.

Size? I don't know, the norm sounds good. They appear to be 12mm x 6mm, give or take a mm. This is the extent of the writing on the caps:
            47uf16v
            105c
            A9149
            Nichicon
            PC(M)

            10uf63v
            105c
            A9150
            Nichicon
            PC(M)

I can't find these listed on the Nichicon site. They must be obsolete.

If you search in the forum for Nichicon PC(M) there are a couple of thread but cant spot a recommended substitute.
I would be inclined to go for these seem to have lowish esr

Thanks for your quick replies. I can't get both caps in that series, does it matter? Or should I get them both in the same series such as the Nichicon PS.

Re: Are all Caps the Same?

Series doesn't matter as long as the specs are the close to the originals. Nichicon PS are good, i've fixed a 40" LCD with one that has run for 10+ years in a 21" CRT. Still tested fine and i'm sure it will outlast the other parts in the TV, as it's also physically larger than the original cap (Samwha WB). The PSU had the room, so the only reason they went for a smaller can size was cost cutting.

                  A working TV? How boring!

Well it seems to be working. The new caps are smaller than the old ones so I hope it lasts.

Thank you all for your input.

those don't look like burn marks to me. it looks like the old caps leaked their electrolyte.

and what you see is leakage.clean it up or it will eat traces.
