    Re: esr or cap tester

After more than a month, it's still not even in the country.

The Tver from where it has been sent is not that far, aprox. 1600 km. For this distance, I could deliver that faster on bicycle!

      Hi Behemot,
sorry for I am not such often here.
I see you don't know Russian customs
goods can stuck there for 4-5 weeks easily!!!
but sometimes it can be only 1 week, who knows...
any case I can refund your money back to your paypal.
In this case you will not worry about money you probably lost
BUT you must promise that you will pay AFTER unit is on your hands
      Ok?
      (that's why i don't like international orders........)

        Re: esr or cap tester

Well, do they neccessarily stop it on your customs? Usually they don't that much care what's inside if it's going out from the country. At least here they stop it as import mostly.

Anyway, can you have a look what's going on according to the tracking number? Cause the english site is not working very well and only thing it says is it had been sent…

the Russian site says the same... package left from our city and no other information. There passed more than 1 month so i can file complain letter to them for searching. Will do.

People why you are not using PM so to talk about your problems?

About a year back I got a Fluke HV probe from Canada, it took 6 weeks plus few days to arrive.
I did not send a email to the prime minister of Canada so to complain.

Russia is another country, different laws and systems.
It took us ages to learn how to deal with shipping matters related with the Honk Kong post.

Shipped items can also be damaged in transit or lost, it happens every day.

Hello, i'm happy with my ESR Micro V4.0. But obviously it lays some questions:
When you work with small SMD cap like those ones (the beige one):
              http://techpeeks.blogspot.fr/2012/01...capacitor.html
With those kind of caps, which are very commons on motherboard or daughter board, how do you proceed? The value of those caps is not marked anywhere and sometimes you cant find the datasheet. What are the most commons value of those type of caps? ESR Micro V4.0 reliable with those kind of litle things or not? Need to watch more the ESR or the capacitance, in-circuit or not?
              Thanks for some answer!

Those ceramic capacitors are usually low esr. They don't usually degrade (higher esr, lower capacitance), but they can crack (become open, so no capacitance at all) due to flexing of the board and possibly overvoltage and they can die shorted (so they're like a piece of wire)

The yellow capacitor in the picture is a tantalum capacitor as far as I can tell. Tantalum capacitors can have higher capacitance and generally they're all low esr. They're just not used that much because they're more expensive and some manufacturers don't want to work with them because unlike the other capacitors (which leak gas or pop or short out), sometimes when they die they burst into flames.

Tools like these cheaper ESR meters can only reliably give you a capacitance value and an esr for capacitors bigger than 10 uF. Under 10uF, They'll give reasonable measurements for larger capacitors (think 100v rated and up).

They're not designed to measure correctly capacitors under 10 uF but they'll give you their best estimate.

Oh, cool, got it here. Seems that despite restriction of hazardous materials, I got it with two CR2032 cells Mike was also that nice to send me russian manual, possibly to improve my terrible russian. Well, could have had the english one as well to check my translation

Anyway, I can confirm that inability to measure small caps, ceramic Y caps are not measurable for the Micro v4.0 at all.

just wanted some input if anyone used these or knows of anyone that has

One guy under my article said he has it and that it works fine. But if you cannot compare against anything else, you don't know it's bad, do you?

I just received this New-Transistor-Tester-Capacitor-ESR-Inductance-Resistor-Meter-NPN-PNP-Mosfet tester yesterday. So far it seem to be a excellent little tester. I mainly purchase the tester for testing and to help I.D. unknown SMD transistors and MOSFET. and so far it does just that.

testing caps and the ESR of the cap also work great. its display both value.
but on large caps like 470uF you have to press the test button 2 or 3 times to get the ESR value.

all other components get tested with no problem

the only bad about this tester is that you may need to solder three test leads. The surface mount test point works great, but the other test point where you insert the components leads into the test post doesn't accomdate all components leads, some components leads wont fit into the hole.

I have an Wavetek Multi-meter 27xt and a Blue ESR meter to compare reading. the reading where the same.

@ ecking767: I've seen this advertised on eBay by several sellers and I was wondering whether it was any good or not. Considering it's price and you comparing the results to your other meters, it's sounds like it hard to go wrong.

Thanks retiredcaps. The last link was very interesting. Looks like it's a copy of some design developed by someone else down to the firmware. Sounds like you can update the firmware as some folks already have.
