    Flickering on/off Syncmaster 2053BW

    Hi there,

I did a search for my specific model of monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 2053BW) but couldn't find anything. I did find results on similar issues on different monitors though. So I'm assuming my problem is a fairly common one.

Basically, if my monitor is off and I go to turn it back on, there's a good chance the display will flicker (light is really dim and seems to "shake") and it'll turn off after around 2 seconds. I've seen it flickering for longer, maybe 5 seconds and turning on fully, but not often. Sometimes it'll turn on like normal without a problem, but that's getting rarer.

I've read those Syncmasters are notorious for this type of problem. I've opened mine up already and I've got Samwha caps on the power board and 2 of them are bulged. I can't remember the numbers on the board for them, but there were the 2 470uF 25V caps right above the big single 450v cap. All the others seem ok, but I would still replace all of them if it is advised.

I've got 4x 470uF 25V, 2x 1000uF 25V and2x 330uF 35V. All of them are 10mm diameter or under (maybe 8mm for some) and just under 20mm tall. There's also that big single 450V cap, can't remember the uF rating on it though. Is it necessary to replace that one as well or not?

Can anybody guide me to some trusty caps I could buy to replace them?

    What about these 3 types?

    Thanks for the help!

Those caps would be great, whilst its good you try to buy off BC some
Canadian members have remarked on the high taxes and postage you have to pay on some items in Canada so perhaps wait until a Canadian member has seen your post.

You probably do not need to change the BIG cap unless it is obviously bulged.
I dont know if you have an inverter board in that model but perhaps check and see if there are any caps on there. - may save double ordering.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

I don't really mind paying the $9.50 shipping charge. Even though it's somewhat high for small components, it's still cheaper than buying a brand new monitor for $100+. I'd hate throwing away a whole monitor just because of small components that needs replacing that would cost me less than $15 to fix. Wouldn't wanna act like all the commoners now right? :P haha!

I took some pictures of all the boards from my monitor and some close ups of the bad caps in question.

I'm not sure if the long and thin board at the bottom of the last picture would be the inverter, but when I lifted it up, it was full of micro controllers and ultra tiny chips. There's nothing on there that I could service myself. Everything is way too small. The only caps I could see were on the power supply board. I just noticed there are some smaller caps I didn't notice, but they seem in good shape.

I would replace all 8 caps on that power supply/inverter board combo, those two caps with domed tops are part of the filter caps for the backlights inverter circuit.
The long board on the LCD panel assembly is the T-CON board. I use PANASONIC FM/FR/FC series for all my repair works.

          Re: Flickering on/off Syncmaster 2053BW

Here's an updated list of the caps included on the board. I had some ratings wrong and forgot 3 smaller caps.

          2x 1000uF 16V
          4x 470uF 25V
          2x 330uF 25V
          1x 47uF 35V
          1x 1uF 50V
          1x 100uF 16V
          1x 100uF 450V

The 100uF 450v does not normally fail, so would only replace if it is leaking etc.
