    I've been told so many times over the years, "Never assume". And yes very lucky it didn't blow up!
    Anyway, thanks to you and selldoor for your input and advise. Not all was lost, because I can now tell the difference between a mosfet and a voltage regulator and test voltages. :-)

      Me too but its all seemed to make sense at the time- They even had 25v caps
      16v would have probably done the job for a 12v adapter but having 25v must have covered up the problem. 16v ones would have shown it up quickly

        I'm thinking of things like the t-con -- it's quite common for them to be rated 12V±1V so giving 20V could have fried the LCD panel, lucky it did not!
