    I rarely ever see them leak, except when they have been sitting in something for many years (8 or more). I wonder if the flashlight incident was due to one cell being much weaker and being reverse charged by the other two. Personally I avoid 3 x AAA cell LED flashlights even though many are dirt cheap these days.

      The same is true for 6v latern batteries... although what kind and quantity varies by brand. some have C cells, some have AAs...
      I don't recall if they were Duracell or Energizer, but I've seen some 9V that used a different design with a stack of 6 clear plastic rectangular cells that individually looked unlike any standard cell form factor I've ever seen.
