    Failed 2WIRE AC adapter

Bad caps. The output shows 5V no load, 3.6V when hooked them up to the Modem/router.
It goes to show that by changing to 16V cap from 10V cap will not fix cheap cap problem that will fail anyway.

    Re: Failed 2WIRE AC adapter

I fixed the exact same adapter last year and it's still going strong. Hardest part was prying the plastic case apart to get at the circuit board. What type of glue did you use to bond it back together?

I use Super glue Gel, I like gel type much better, and it does not clog up the tube if you do not use it for a long time. 3 for a Dollar at Dollar store.
Flat blade screw driver to side will pry it right up.
The Modem/routers were acting up with intermittent drop out, etc.
Date code as stamped on the body are
One is 0720ND, and another one is 0526NC.
        I use PANASONIC FM series, 1000uF 10Vdc.
I did not replace the primary side cap, want to see how long it will last.

I usually use PVC cement. Put a drop on the inside of the casing and wait a minute. If it is mildly dissolving the plastic, making it softer where the cement was then it's compatible and will fuse the shell back together again. Sometimes you have to file away some material around the seam to get a good fit as it may have deformed a bit when it was popped open.

I've fixed a few of these and electrical taped them back together.

as someone who did house calls for two years, let me say its ALWAYS those damn 2wire adapters for the grey/white routers. I've seen about 10 of those damn dead things. They build them shitty so at&t can make money selling the customer a new router, unless that person is renting it

One thing I often do is put the top half of the shell (once removed) in the drill press and add a bunch of tiny vent holes to help them run cooler.

Thanks 999999, I will try PVC cement next time when I have to open wallwart for repair, never thought of using PVC cement before.

That plastic is usually ABS or PVC and can be solvent welded with PVC glue, acetone, carburetor/throttle body cleaner, or lacquer thinner.

around here american thieves and thugs(at&t) gets customers to buy these modems.
replacement cost is high if you dont know to grab one from a yardsale for $5.
i see plenty of these adaptors needing recap.
                      rifeking LOL.
one of the early bad cap brands.
must be really old stock that didnt get pitched.
did one a few days ago and it had rifeking.
and to put it back together i use the medium ca and accelerator found in hobby shops.

yeah... but I killed my 2Wire (well, when I had AT&T) with a firmware upgrade, so it's got a barely-used power adapter...
So if anybody wants to buy one...
And it's the new version that is a little bigger and has an extra 0.1A rating

I think those modems are sold in Australia by Tel$tra, although I don't come accross them very often.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Yup, cheap caps are cheap and will fail. The only thing worse than that is overworked cheap caps as is the case with this adapter. Then again, it's a 2-transistor self-oscillating design... obviously this adapter was designed and built as cheap as possible.

Did it leave any marks? I know I do when I use the screwdriver. A hammer on the other hand works very well for me. Just turn the adapter on the side and whack it a few times until I hear cracking noise. A few more on the other side and the adapter usually opens without any prying.

You guys are brutal, I just put it in a vise and when I first start to hear it crack I run a wood chisel long the seam if/when needed. Most often I can just rotate it in the vise to pop the targeted side one at a time.

Well, I used to be careful. However, last winter I started working in a repair shop and my patience with cheap Chinese electronics has greatly diminished.
I just got a pretty nice 19" LCD monitor the other day with instant-to-black issue. At first, I started taking it apart slowly and carefully. But having the case not even budge after 5 minutes, I took the big screw driver and just pried the damn fucker apart. It's all chewed up pretty badly on one side now. Given the cheap built quality of the PSU/inverter though, I honestly couldn't care less.
