D-Link DIR615

The other day a friend bought me some stuff in the stuff was a nice D-Link router.
Plugged it in with correct power supply and flicked the switch on the side.
No go.

Tested the power supply that puts out the right volts.
Tested power supply plugged into the device that stayed at 0.2 the whole time.

Now I'm Unsure what to do next.

None of the IC's look fried or discolored.

Can here faint buzzing noise also near power outlet but to get that I have to tap it a few times.

Is the polarity of the DC plug is correct on the power supply you are using? Is the center pin positive or negative? You can also check the resistance of the center pin of the DC input jack and Ground to see if it shows low Ohm.

Test the adapter with a load - 5volts? try a 6 volt bulb or perhaps some leds?

I have got another similar power pack and I have plugged in both to the device.
the power pack also powers my other router that I have laying about.

power packs all worked. router I had laying about worked.

So that rules out power pack problems don't it?

My guess is someone at one point in time has plugged in the wrong power pack.

The unit requires 5VDC 3A, center pin is Positive.

I used a spare dlink router power pack I had from my other router known to work.
so it does rule out power pack.

Could be a bad joint on the connector if it buzzes? Pictures will need to be a
great deal better if you want people to suggest what to test next.

Check if anything gets hot on the board while the power adapter is plugged in.
Or as budm suggested, check the resistance between ground and the positive pin on the power jack (with the power adapter plugged, of course). Let us know what resistance you get.

I have notice that the buzz will take awhile to come on.
when you switch off from the power point it sounds like a motor slowing down you hear a tick tick tick.


not sure about these photos I think they got down sized when they were sent to me via mms.

also i replaced the caps closest to the power supply.

with the psu connected, look if those two small square chips in the upper right corner are hot, or look burned.

do you mean 105 & 112 or the smd inductors below it?

Well, nothing is going to get hot because the switching power supply will go into shutdown mode to protect itself from trying to feed current into shorted circuits. You still do not tell us the resistance reading at the DC input pin jack (no power supply attached to it) as shown in post 3 and 9.
There at least 3 switching regulator power supplies on the board.

There you go, now you just have to start isolating the loads and find out where the short/shorts is/are.

Just a done a reading of the first switch and it was only doing 0.0 0.1 0.2 0.3

In a loop.
