    Xbox 1.6 Power Supply Problem

    Hello,

I have a original Xbox 1.6 that I am tinkering with.

Originally it had 5 bad 3300uF 6.3v caps near the power connector on the motherboard. I replaced those with some low ESR replacements and the Xbox worked good for a couple months. Then the other day I pressed the power button and got nothing.
I swapped in a good PSU from another 1.6 Xbox and it fired right up.
On the bad PSU I don't see any obvious signs of damage and the fuse tested good with my DMM.

I'm not getting any voltage readings at the power connector that plugs into the motherboard.
I'm somewhat of a newb but where would be a good place to start? what part is likely bad?

    The PSU is labeled Tuscany.

    thanks

So are you getting any DCV between the two legs of each one of the two main filter caps in the primary side?

That's a perfect voltage, have you checked the primary transistors or the rectifier on the secondary for shorts?

I am a newb so I am not sure what the rectifier is, but I have checked all the transistors and all give a reading except Q6 (circled in pic next to big cap)

          thanks

Tell us what is written on the pieces mounted on the heatsink and we will tell you what they are and how to test them

Re: Xbox 1.6 Power Supply Problem

I cant make out whats written on most of them because of the other components that are in the way. One of the items on the backside of the big heatsink says SF1004G.

The board looks a little discolored in the area of resistor R10.
I googled "xbox power supply r10" and it appears another person with version 1.0 of this PSU had an issue with this resistor. http://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/forum/vi...t=4946&p=33993

How can I tell if mine is bad and what would be a good replacement?
Could I harvest 1 off of a old PC motherboard? (I have a few of those laying around)

              thanks

EDIT: Nevermind on the resistor. It measures 68.3 so I think it is good.

Can we see good clear straight shot pictures of the bottom side of the board?

See those two small lytics cap right next to the power resistor? They are probably startup/running caps, try heating them with hair dryer for 2~3 minutes and then apply the power to the board to see if you will get any dcv output on the cold side.

tried heating the caps with my heat gun, but still didn't get any output.

Is it me or is that a burnt mark on the middle of the PCB?

Re: Xbox 1.6 Power Supply Problem

I think its a shadow in the picture..I cant see any burn marks on the bottom of the board.
I do see some discoloration on the top side of the board though near the R10 resistor and the thing with a yellow top in front of the big heatsink (transformer?). The board looks darker in this area

Re: Xbox 1.6 Power Supply Problem

Well is a resistor, they get hot because of the inefficient way the work, the big yellow thing is indeed the transformer and it looks like the discoloration on its side of the PCB is due to the same resistor.

I found a used psu on ebay for $12. I think that will be the quickest and easiest way to get the ole xbox back up and running.

Thank u both for all your help

That resistor looks to be part RC Snubber network.

Now you can compare the working PSU against the non working one. I would check the gate drive components, what ever switches the FET on the primary on the old PSU.
