    Dell 1707FPc

So this is my first time attempting to disassemble an LCD Monitor. (I'm really hoping I can get it back together when I'm done!)

Anyways, I found smalltownguy's thread about the same monitor I have, having the same issues I'm having. The monitor turns on and stays on for several seconds then goes black. The light is out, but I can still barely see the image.

I've taken it apart and I believe the cold cathodes to be the problem.
    So my questions are:
Am I correct in thinking the cold cathodes are the problem?
    Where can I get replacements?
Does anyone know of a detailed guide to putting a monitor back together? lol
I followed a couple of different guides during the disassembly, neither of which were for my exact model, so I had to wing it a bit, but was able to get it apart without breaking anything.

    Hi Welcome to the forum,

CCFL Warehouse are a good place to get your CCFL's especially if your in the USA.

There are many things that can go wrong with a monitor to give it the 2 seconds to black symptoms. One thing you could try is now you have the CCFL's out plug them into the CCFL sockets and power up the monitor. Then take a look and see which ones come on and which ones dont.

Then wait a few minutes before you unplug them and swap them around into different sockets and see if the same bulb doesnt work or if its the socket that isn't working.

    Let us know your findings.

      1) Members have good experience with

      http://www.ccflwarehouse.com/

However, I don't know if this monitor is worth repairing given the cost of replacements + shipping. You may be able to find another working 17 inch LCD on your local craigslist for $20?

      2) My standard answer for 2 seconds to black

2 seconds to black can be

      a) bad caps
      b) bad ccfls
      c) bad ccfl wiring (especially the return wiring)
      d) bad secondary windings on the inverter transformer

So the evident black, burnt looking ends of the bulbs are not a sure sign of bad/dying ccfls?

It is the sign that the lamps are wearing out but not to point of failing yet, they may draw a lot of current and it depends on the circuits that they are being used in which will have a over current trip point per the design of the manufacturer. So it may light up in one model of the inverter board but not in the other.
Just try what Jasgriff suggested and also by retiredcaps.

            Same as above....

You might have a bit more life in those bulbs. It might just be wire that has burnt on the end of one of those ccfl's which can be carefully soldered back on. we just need to identify if its a tube or the inverter.

He need to try using old CFL for testing the inverter first before taking the monitor apart. But we will wait to find out when he tests them as you suggested.

Looks like he did get the lamp assemblies out already, so now he can do the test as you have suggested. If he had tested the inverter circuits using old CFL then he will know if it is the lamp or the inverter problem.

                    Re: Dell 1707FPc

Sorry for the delay, this monitor is only a small part of a larger project I'm working on... And I was unsure of my ability to perform the required task.. Like I said before, this is the first time I've ever taken apart an LCD. I'm thoroughly surprised that I didn't break it.
                    So..
I plugged the ccfls into the sockets, and powered on the monitor to observe. Both lamps are only on for a second before turning off as expected.
However, I was able to see that one of the lamps doesn't even come on.
So I switched the sockets and again, the same lamp didn't come on. I've circled the lamp in the pictures below, as well as provided a picture of the board so you can get a good look at the caps.

The blackened section looks bad, but you may want to check the wires that are connected to the end of the lamps also. See my pictures of bad lamp assemblies here:

You did good for not doing this disassembly before.
