    Dell 2005fpw

My Dell 2005fpw recently started acting up with the following symptoms.

-Occasionally goes black, buttons on the front stay green. Image will come back if you power down via the button and power back up again. This cycle will repeat about every 5 min.

    -Hissing type of noise

-Kind of an ozone smell after dis-assembly.

-None of the components look visibly damaged/distorted, but I

This is my first venture into computer/monitor repair, I can follow directions very well and I have already ordered new Panasonic Capacitors for the Inverter Board from digikey. Should I recap the board first or are there other diagnostic tests I should run first?

      Thanks,

Took the monitor apart a little further and finally found something wrong. Now I just need to source a new CCFL Assembly. Any vendors that you guys would suggest?

Overall length of the tube + plastic end caps = 15.875" (15-7/8")
      Height/Depth Across the 3 tubes = 0.402"

Found product specs for the LCD screen.

But this is quickly looking like it is no longer gonna be a cost effective repair. I would assume that since this lamp assembly went out, the other one is not far behind?

6 tubes x $9.95 = $59.70 or about the same for two new lamp assemblies. Or get a new monitor for $100 more and it wont be 6 years old.

Check ebay, ccflwarehouse.com and ccfldirect overstock specials ($4 if you can find one that matches).

              Re: Dell 2005fpw

Just found myself in the same situation this afternoon with the same monitor. I have not opened it up yet to confirm where the defect is, but these are the EXACT same symptoms I am having.

I would be curious to hear how this turned out for MH20, assuming (s?)hes still around.

                Doubtful. Last activity was 6-13-2011.

You should open it up just to confirm. Not everyone of these has the arcing problem, sometimes it's just $15 worth of caps and you're done.

A lot of hours on the unit? At that age, investment in a new(er) unit may be the better way to go. Stepping up to a 24" model when you do!

I kind of figured that would be the case.

I went ahead and just nabbed a 24 inch ultrasharp for under $300. The monitor appears to still work fine, except for the hissing and ozone it's emitting from one corner. Having a monitor that outputs ozone kind of freaks me out.

Once the new one arrives, I'll crack open the old one and see what is up. Having a second monitor for a small repair cost would be nice, as it still offers a great picture, but it would be nice if it didn't output ozone into my apartment. I already have a headache, but it could be coincidental.

That can be sign of bad wires on the lamps, or at the lamp's connectors. Do not run it like that since more damage can occur.

Yikes... There has been no affect on the lighting yet, so I am crossing my fingers that all the mercury gas is still contained (the logic being, if the gas had leaked, I would be seeing dim spots on the screen where the laps failed.)

So I think I found out what was going on:
                        http://www.flickr.com/photos/bretc/s...th/8096103982/

I see rust around the burned out spot, indicating some kind of liquid damage? I dont remember spilling anything on it. Oh well.

It has been through the mail a few time, and lived around room mates. Who knows. The hissing sound was coming out of the opposite side of where the clear damage was.

Some of the images are for reference. I cant get any deeper into the innards untill I pick up some smaller screw drivers. I just moved and dont have a eyeglass driver set.

I might just recycle it though. Or craigslist it. Someone in portland will want it right?
