Asus g46vw help with missing cap unknown value

    Board History:
Replaced the DC Jack because the original part had a broken pin
    the laptop booted up
battery was maybe 7% or so
showed plugged in and charging but battery ran out and then stayed at 0%
    it shut off suddenly
rebooted a few times but shut off quicker each time
now it was not booting or showing any lights or anything
then i tried holding down the power button for a minute - worked but soon died
took out the dc jack - looked fine so i reinstalled it
noticed a cap that was sticking up on one side - somehow it broke off and fell
cant find it, it's gone, no chance at finding it.

i do know that it was VISUALLY the same as the cap directly below it.

what is the chance that they were the same values?
(they are both attached to the same L44? components)

i cant locate any schematics or board views.
    i have capacitance capable multi-meter.

how can i find the value of the missing cap? without having a 2nd board?

does anyone know what the value might be?

i circled the spot in red - the image is my actual board

thanks for any response in advance!

looks a very good chance they are both same value ...
do you not have a metal detector ?

thanks for the reply...metal detector...i should have thought of that...ha ha.

      a few more questions:

is it possible that this cap is the reason the battery was not charging?

or would 0% while plugged in and "charging" be the battery gone bad?

or maybe i messed something up at the dc jack?

thanks again to anyone that can help me out!

without a schematic all i can guess is the cap is to stop the transistor oscillating . thats if it is indeed a transistor .

i de-soldered one side of the adjacent cap, it measured 95.4 nF on the multi-meter.

          does 95nF on meter = 100nF cap?

is so, does a 100nF cap seem reasonable here.
the transistor? it connects to has "l44" and k8? or kb? written on it.

          thanks for the help!

i would try a 100nf in there ..very good chance it will be just fine .

If you don't have the schematic, the datasheet of the charging ic might help locating the problem.

Here, replace it with this, it's a Vishay so it'll be good quality. Should fix the problem. Also, that part is a diode, can't find a datasheet but I was able to dig up what it was. It could be a transistor, but the numbers you gave point towards a diode package.

if its a diode the cap is to tame switching noise .circuit may well work fine without it but best to have it in place

Yep, we'll see if this fixes it though.

Re: Asus g46vw help with missing cap unknown value

I had a scrap Asus laptop motherboard that had some 100nF caps, so I threw those into the repair board.

With the Power plugged in I got a solid orange battery light.
I left it plugged in for a while to see if it would change/charge.
No change same solid no blinking orange light.
Pressed power button...and booted (same as before)
before I could check out the battery status utility...suddenly shut off.
a few tries but no luck .... just same shut off.

This laptop is a pain to get to the battery/board so I can't easily get right in there and tweak things. I'm gonna keep trying at least a few more times. I found replacement boards on ebay for around $100 but the range is up to $350 and mostly from china.

Do used motherboards from Ebay work ok? Do the sellers actually send working boards?

I was hoping someone out there might have dealt with these symptoms on this Asus ROG g46 or any similar model, and would be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

Thanks for replying...it helps build some confidence and motivation!

                        Hi
Does it start with internal battery left out and just using power adapter? Do you have another adapter to try ? Maybe original one can't handle load. With battery left in and plugging adapter in with out trying to power up does dc jack led light up?

so...after 8 months of sitting on the shelf i am getting back at this laptop repair/diagnostic.

I decided to remove and replace the power jack (i picked up a better soldering iron Weller wes51)
cleaned up the previous soldering and touched up the connections of the dc jack and the tiny caps from before

-plugged it in got the orange light
-left it plugged in a half hour
                          -pressed power button
                          -it powered up, booted
                          -battery showed 28% and charging
-let it run a few minutes
-battery showed 29% and 1 hour 16 min until full charge)
-turned of for now waiting for the full charge

i am happy as this is a lot better than plugged in charging 0% and the works for less than a minute then auto shuts off that i had before
                          we will see...
i just wanted to update the post since it was sort of left open ended and I think this is going to work now
if something changes i will be back...

thanks for the help from months ago...i appreciate it.

Asus g46vw help with missing cap unknown value...SOLVED!
