    The Glue or Mastic question

I know it's recommended to remove the old glue or mastic, but are there times when you need to glue components and what would you use? For example on the Samsung 245bw invertor board the 4 caps have like a white bathroom caulk securing the cap end to the board. I don't know if that's really necessary. You also see resistors glued to each other and caps glued to resistors, etc.

    Thanks
    Mike

Re: The Glue or Mastic question

I only remove glue if I need to remove a component that has glue on it, or if the glue has turned brown. Some glues that turn a brownish colour start to conduct and cause weird problems.

The yellow glue which will turn brown and become conductive and also corosive whick will eat away the conductors. The glue are used to keep the component in place during wave soldering process. I do not use any glue except if the parts are laid side way such as big filter cap, I use electronic grade Silicone RTV, regular Silicone RTV has mild acid (the vinegar oder) which will damage conductor such as copper trace.

The silicone RTV rated safe for car exhaust oxygen sensors should also be OK. Before it cures it smells a bit like alcohol instead of like vinegar. A lot of GE brand RTV is like that, but it's not labelled "sensor safe".

I just might have some of that being a mechanic/technician.
