    Capacitors essentially always fail with increased ESR.

    Dissipation factor only enters the equation if capacitance falls.

    But, here's the fun part: Many ESR meters, and many multimeters, also measure capacitance.

    So, there is no need to measure dissipation factor (=ESR/Xc where Xc can be calculated knowing ESR meter frequency, typically 100kHz, and the capacitance.)
    i dont think my Multimeter has a capacitance setting it was only $13 i am leaning towards the blu esr meter but it will cost me about $100 or $120 fully assembled and that is with shipping.

      My personal favourite is the ESR60, I use it. It will also measure capacitance.

      Or you could try and get hold of RusMike's one which does the two for about $50.

          I use RusMike's ESR tester and it works great for what I (and most Badcaps members do) fixing monitors, TVs etc.

          Now It may be too cheap and not go over 100hz, but I'm probably too stupid to know the difference, so it's all good.

            Re: esr meter?

            I bought this a month ago to try out, I have been using it for testing cap in the power supply, I use the calibrated SENCORE LC-75 as a ref. Measured the bad cap with the SENCORE and compare the reading with the MESR, readout is within .01. It is now being used in the repair department. The only bad thing is that the supplied probes is not well made and it does not have auto shut down. Otherwise it is OK, just keeping an eye on it for long term, it also has fixed 100KHz FREQ. If all you are doing is to work on SMPS, TV, Monitors, this will be fine. Long term reliability is not know yet. I will take it apart to see how well it is made inside later.

              RusMike's ESR tester is
              real 100kHz standard tester

              100Hz is too low for
              accurate ESR sampling

                  @tom66

                  I am always look akward to the ones who are hunting imprerfect solutions, by the excuse that they do not have money, when at their other hand they carry a 400$ cellphone.

                  But I would expect that some one at your level that he would had better understanding.

                    I've been eyeing this model and am glad to see that someone finally bought one and compared it to a calibrated reference. For the price and free shipping, it's very competive to what's available within the $100 price range. I too, am interested in it's long term reliability and looking forward to you taking it apart for a peek at it's insides. Based on the number of these sold so far, it could possibly force some of the other sellers mentioned in this forum to lower their prices.
