    New toys!!!!

So, this week I decided to take some of my hard earned money and buy some new toys for the workbench. I justified it by saying "you haven't bought anything for yourself in a while" and "you should get something for yourself because you got a better job now... you can afford it" also, "she gets to buy whatever she wants, get yourself something"... Okay, enough of my justification!
I got some SMOKING deals! I have wanted a function generator for some time now and not like they are that expensive but I was able to come across a guy who is an instructor at a local ITT Technical Institute, who sold me a GW Instek GFG-8020H for $50 not to bad!
But the kicker to this is he had a really nice 3 channel (2 variable / 1 fixed) power supplies as well. Now, I really wasn't in the market for one but I couldn't let down the deal of $70 for a GW GPC-3020 (it's not digital, but who cares! I got a multimeter for precise measurements). So, needless to say, I had to pick it up.
Last but Not least I was doing a little browsing on eBay and came across a hot air station. I was a little skeptical about this purchase but I came across a video from Dave at the EEVBlog reviewing a similar model. If you're familiar with the EEVBlog, it's hard to make Dave happy. He was surprisingly happy with his purchase of an ATTEN 858D+ for $80. Unfortunately, I was not able to come across a ATTEN that was 110v but the same and I mean the absolute same unit with the manufacture W.E.R was available for $57.95 in the 110v model. So, if Dave was happy at $80, I'm doing flips for under $60! I got it in the mail today and broke out one of my junk boards and started knocking off some SMD parts and WOW!!!! I'm impressed! I don't have to go through the process of setting up my IR rework station for everything anymore... I should have bought one of these YEARS AGO! I love it! If you don't have one or are in the air about quality on this just buy it, it's excellent!!!
Okay, so I'm sure you can see why I'm so excited! for just under $180, I got a bad ass power supply, a decent function generator and a cheap but awesome hot air station! I wish I could find these deals all the time! Thank you for reading my rant of happiness! I try to share it with people I speak to and they have no clue what I'm talking about. There is nothing like getting some GREAT deals on equipment for the bench! Makes me feel all tingly inside!!!

Great, can you give me the link to where you purchase this hot air work station? Thanks.

I would offer $52.50 to the 3 sellers that accept best offer.

PS. I just borrow my friend's heat gun for smd removal.

I thought it was WE'RE because there is that little arrow that comes down on the P making it look like an R in the logo. Any which way it's from China! Lol!

I would normally just use my heat gun as well, but the little attachments make it nice to control where the air flow is going and your not reflowing a giant area when your trying to just hit a single chip. As I said I have an IR BGA welder and sometimes I just hate going through the whole process you have to go through just to remove a SMT chip. It honestly took me 23 seconds to remove a SMT, BGA chip from a board. It makes live so much easier, and much more controlled than a regular heat gun. Again, it was a GREAT buy!

I have the same model, 858+, only made by Atten. I don't think it was more than 60$ from eBay, for the 220-240v model.

Yeah, it's a good tool, no frills about it, it does its job.

Still ... you should open it up and check the internals, making sure it's properly grounded. Some models had problems with the grounding, leaving the metal top susceptible to being hot (in the sense of voltage)

I gave it a look over and it was grounded properly. Thanks for the heads up though! I was playing with that hot air station a little more, I did some heat shrink tubin, desoldered some SMT LEDs and did another IC for fun. I'm not going to lie, I'm a fan! I didn't think it was going to be as great as it is. I'm going to have a large surplus of SMT parts laying around the office soon... lol!

                    Re: New toys!!!!

I was talked out of that, due to quality... honestly that one is a lot bigger as well and will take up precious space on the workbench. However it has a diaphragm built into the station not a fan built into the wand, which is a plus. Space was a concern to me along with everyone telling me to stay away from Ayoua (spelling) products. Not at all saying what I bought was the best, but it was an excellent pick for what I was looking for.

Hi Peter, so the one you have, is the fan in side the box and the heater is in side the wan or the fan/blower and heater are in side the wan? I am trying to decide between the 858 you bought or the 8508 which is a little more, space is not the problem for me.
Did you take the pictures of what are inside your box, and do they offer any replacement heater, etc.
                      Thanks.

I watched that same video, did some researching and purchased a rework station, very similar to that one, for myself. The difference with the model I purchased, was that this one has an optional soldering iron (as well as extra heat elements, accessories, etc)

Note: Not that it matters, but it's spelled W.E.P↑ (That should show up as W.E.P(up arrow). W.E.P↑, Saike, ATTEN, Gorden, HERO, etc.. They are all the same thing with a different name badge.

I looked at the same model that you purchased, but I figured the optional iron and extra accessories were well worth the extra $25.

I bought the one the has the fan in the wand. No, I didn't take any pictures( I didn't even think to). If you go to YouTube and put in eevblog hotair station (ithink it blog #167) Dave from EEVBlog takes apart his station and wand. This.video is what made me go with this unit rather than the one you're looking at as well.

Yea, I would say it is worth the extra $25, I wish I would have seen this. I would have liked an extra soldering iron. Nothing is worst when you have a tip on that you think will be perfect for an application and then once you start, you realize you should have used a thicker one or something like that. You have to wait for it to cool down. Instead you could just fire up the other station. DAMN! Wish I would have seen this one? Is yours 220 or 110?

It's 110v. I think that the iron it comes with is the same iron used on the, Radio Shack Digital Soldering Station 64-053, which I also have. So tips and everything should be compatible.
