If you are referring to an indicator LED, then just keep the current below the recommended maximum. I have found that most panel indicator LED's get plenty bright running at 1/10th the maximum current or less.
If you are referring to a high power flashlight LED, such as the 1 watt and above units built on their own heat sink, heat is a big issue in keeping the LED from destroying itself. The more heat, the shorter the expected lifetime.Is it plugged in?
