    Cat5 Capabilities

Hi Guys, wondering if anyone can help me with the following issue, I'm on a 240mb Internet Connection, both my Router & Computer have Gigabyte ports but the maximum speed i can get is approximately 80mb at any one time, nothing else accessing the Internet during testing, i have a Cat5 cable connecting the PC direct to the Router, could this be the reason, will upgrading to Cat6 improve my speed? any help with this or any other suggestions would be most welcome, many thanks in advance.

network controllers have an internal loopback function for testing,
i would find some software to make use of it.
i would not be surprised if the speed limit was before the network controller.
either the bus speed or your harddrive.

You only need to upgrade to Cat5e cables to get gigabit speeds.
Are all the ports on the router gigabit ?
Cheeky neighbours on an unsecure network ?

You've mixed a few terms in your description, can you confirm your MB and Mbps? For instance, on a 1Gbps network connection the highest theoretical MB throughput is 125MB/s from machine to machine, etc.

Many ISP's advertise connection speeds as "up to" ie. maximum attainable value, and in practice the speeds tend to be lower than advertised, sometimes significantly, especially with high-speed connections such as yours. I'd first check what your modem reports as its current link speed.

                Re: Cat5 Capabilities

Sounds to me like your devices are accessing the Internet over 10/100 ethernet and not gigabit.

This is not a function of the cable you're using, as cat-5 ... especially at distances less than 200 meters ... will handle traffic pretty close to gigabit (1,000 megabits).

The fact that you're only seeing 80 tells me that you're using 10/100 ethernet ports either on your router, or on your workstations.

ANOTHER option is that the ISP has their end of your router incorrectly configured and that they are delivering you 200+ megabits of bandwidth over a 100 megaibit WAN port on your router ... ask them to test the service speed at your router to make sure you are getting the service you paid for delivered into your building and at your routing device ... if they can get the full 200+ of bandwidth, then start looking at how the ports are configured for the LAN side of your router and also on the devices you're using. If your devices are wireless then make sure they are using wireless technology that will support those speeds.

every single device in the internet connection must be capable and configured to process data packets at speeds above what you're paying for ...

                Mike

By the way, this actually happened to me once the first time I bought a 300 megabit FIOS internet connection. I was getting less than 100 megabits but I knew immediately to check the 10/100 vs 10/100/1000 settings on my ethernet ports ... I was running gigabit so I called Verizon and asked them to look at the layer 2 side of my router and make sure it was configured for gigabit ... in my case, it turned out to be the fiber to copper bridge at the side of my house. It was still configured for 10/100 which was fine when I only had a 40 megabit connection ... but they upgraded my service without being thorough and checking the config on the CPE ... they got it changed within minutes to gigabit and BAM ... everything took off like a bolt of lightning ... never forget the first time I downloaded a 3 gigabyte torrent in less than 90 seconds ... a milestone for my life ... lol

If you're telling me that the work ethic in Ireland is to not work as often as possible, I might consider a move ;-) ... hows the pickins on good looking Irish women in the late 30s to mid 40s?

                            ;-)

Haa, haa, both unfortunately, steer clear & enjoy the easy life. Contacted my ISP today and was informed that my Router should have been upgraded last September when my package was upgraded, apparently my current Router is not Docsis 3 compatible, never bleedin heard of it but apparently the new one will solve all my issues, i'll reserve judgement until its up and running though, support guy seemed well clued in which is a surprise to say the least as i've been in contact 2-3 times before in relation to the same issue and the fuc*ers didnt have a clue, Router being delivered tomorrow so i'll update you with the good news (or not) tomorrow evening

DOCSIS 3 has only been out for ... 11 years ... nice of them to finally get on board and upgrade their network to the "NEW" standard... lol

DOCSIS 3.1 is the newest latest and greatest standard and its been out less than two years...

If you're curious ... all the info you'll probably ever want is right here:

I'm sure it's going to fix your problem ... let me know.
