My guess is the heatsink is not flush with the cpu, it may look like its on properly but the temp says otherwise.

A different cooler wont help you, if your at 70C you have other issues, even a stock cooler on a overclocked Pentium D 130W will be under 70C, unless you have no case fans with a blanket over it and the room is at 100F.

Like I said before your heatsink is not flush on the CPU even if your eyes tell you it is, or you have other problems which would be rare.

Thank you for your response brethin
I have spent a lot of time fitting the cooler. I have to admit I am waiting on thermel paste but I doubt this would make a huge difference. I will let you know when I have applied it.
PS never had any on this on other 775 boards
I have also swapped the CPU

Since it is socket 775 double check to make sure the latch is closed all they way. I have seen where the cpu was not above the latch after its locked down and that caused the heatsink to ride on top of the latch and not make direct contact with the cpu. If that is the case here paste will help but if the gap is too great you may need a shim between the cooler and the cpu.

                Thank you all...
I put paste on and verry verry carefully screwed down them dumb 775 legs so now we got a current system temp of 37C and the CPU running at 42C

                  Good to hear!
I knew exactly what it was, heatsink not making good contact with cpu. 99% of the time that is.

Are you saying you didn't use any thermal paste at all? That would likely make a huge difference, especially if it's a Pentium D.

yep. even the cheapo generic white silicone based stuff already makes a huge difference.

i usually keep a 40gram tube of the cheap generic heatsink compound around for testing, and use the better stuff for final setups.
