EVGA GTX 460 - Bad Caps

    Hi guys,

I am looking for the correct caps to repair an EVGA GTX 460. There are two blown caps on the card. I have highlighted them in the pictures.

The first one is slightly smaller and it's called: f0 820 2.5z

The second one is bit bigger than the other and it's called: f0 ORCZ 270 16V

I truly, truly, truly appreciate it if you can help me find the right caps to repair my card.

Re: EVGA GTX 460 - Bad Caps

Stop using that big text please!

The caps on there are Lelon polies, They made junk lytics, and I've long suspected that they may not be doing polies right either.

It looks like you have 270uF 16V and 820uF 2.5V caps there.

Use these for the 270uF 16V polies.

For the 820uF 2.5V polies use these if they are 6.3mm diameter, or these if they are 8mm diameter
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Good, we have a confirmed case that Matsuki/Lelon polymers are worthless, as I've always suspected.
"We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed [sic]. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, 'Save me!' He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

I probably should add, replace ALL of the lelon caps, busted or not, because they will fail sooner or later.

Re: EVGA GTX 460 - Bad Caps

Thanks for the quick response c_hegge. I know for a GPU VRM I need "Ultra Low ESR" (The "PSC" Capacitors). Do they meet this criteria? Also, I'm not familiar with these brands, could you please tell me what will be the highest quality product I can find in the market to replace all the caps?

Re: EVGA GTX 460 - Bad Caps

The PSC is simply a series of solid caps made by Chemi-con. The ones I suggested as replacements are all high quality Japanese capacitors, and their specs should be fine for this card.

For Polymer caps, the following are known to be good reliable brands:
            Nichicon
            FPCAP
            Fujitsu
            Sanyo/OS-CON
            Chemi-Con

The ones I suggested in my earlier post were from Nichicon.

Re: EVGA GTX 460 - Bad Caps

I'm thinking of purchasing this as the 8.0mm 270uF 16V and this one as the 6.30mm 820uF 2.5V. United Chemi-Con seems good to me. What do you think?

p.s Please double check the specs just in case I'm making a mistake you can catch it.

The Nichicon polymers at Digikey are better rated.

I suspect that's due to the low price. Chemi-Con costs three times more.

Re: EVGA GTX 460 - Bad Caps

Digikey has better prices for Nichicon than they do for UCC. Nichicon polymers are just as good as Chemicon polymers, and they are around 50 cents less.

                      Here are my reccomendations:
                      2.5V 820uF $0.96
                      16V 270uF $0.84

Oh, and listen to c-Hegge and replace all the caps.

Thanks guys for helping out, I really appreciate that. I got the Chemicon caps. Is there anything else I should bear in mind while installing the caps (what to do so that things don't come loose when they heat up etc.) Also, Do you think changing to higher quality caps will help achieve better over-clocking?

There's not much risk of other things coming off as you heat up the PCB, unless you touch other parts with your soldering iron.

Better quality caps probably won't make it OC better. That really comes down to the design of the cooler and the VRM. Better quality caps just don't blow up after a few years like the cheapies do.

Just curious but that is a pretty recent VGA card; The GTX 460 series was launched in July 2010
When was your's manufactured and is it out of warranty already?

No, I meant what kind of filler metal do I have to use for soldering the caps so they won't come loose while being under pressure in the future. I know there are different fillers and each one has a different melting point and other properties. What would you recommend?

That's true. But, I got it from EVGA B-Stock. So, it's basically a refurbished product and didn't come with a warranty.

Great card though, that's why I want to resurrect it so badly.

The solder itself holds them in. Just make sure the joints have an appropriate amount of solder.
