    Dell 1704FP

    I just completed a repair of a 1704FP with bad caps on the power supply. This was a very simple fix, but maybe it will help someone working on the same model in the future.

    The only symptom was not powering on when the power button was pressed.

    The photos are:
    1) Top side of power supply board.
    2) Bottom side of power supply board.
    3) Top side of power supply board after repair.
    4) Bottom side of power supply board after repair.
    5) Working monitor after repair.

    The replaced caps are C823, C824, and C825. The originals were 10v@1000uF and I replaced them with 25v@1000uF because I had some on hand.

    It looks like the originals were Capxon. They make possibly the worst or 2nd worst brand of caps. For that reason and the fact that most "one time DIYers" don't have an ESR meter, the regulars here generally recommend replacing all the poor quality brand name caps (due to guilt by association) with quality low ESR caps like Panasonic FR/FM/FC series.

      Good work getting it going again.
      I and most people here would suggest that all the main Electrolytics caps in the secondary side should be replaced at the same time, the c823, 824, 825 are for the 5Vdc power supply section, the other caps are for the backlights inverter section which more likely to go out later on.
      Did you use low ESR type caps, which is a must for switching power supply circuits.

        Thanks for the comments. My replacements are supposedly low ESR based on the datasheet, but they're not Panasonic/Nichicon/Matsushita so no gaurantee. I'm using the monitor for personal use as a secondary backup, so if I run into further issues with caps going out, I will probably replace all of them with high quality caps.

        Yep, the originals were Capxon.

        I would have replaced all of them if I had the correct values on hand, I just got lucky and had a few of the 1000uF.
