I just broke my Blue Ring Tester. Can you help?

I was attempting to check the a winding on a SMPT. The board has recently been powered on, but it was unplugged and I drained the filter cap. When connecting the probes I heard a tiny spark of static and the meter turned off and will not come back on. Any ideas?

I would first check if the battery is good.

If it has protection devices on the input, those could have shorted from the spike, and drained the battery. Check the battery in circuit, with a DMM.

Otherwise, I would replace the counter IC and any op-amps.

Battery is good. I just did a search (should have done that first) and see that it is most likely IC1. I will swap it out and see what happens.

Here is the manual with diagram, check the Diode at the input.

Confirmed it was IC1. Is there any way to add protection without effecting accuracy?

A 10V bidirectional TVS across the test terminals should do.
