    Viewsonic VX2235WM - blank screen on/off

Hello All, good to learn that there are people like you guys out there! I am a handyman but new to electronics. This is an area I try to stay away. Stated yesterday while working on my pc my VX2235WM went blank on me. The LED stay blue but no picture; as I move the mouse around I notice a white line pops in/out horizontally on the screen. I have checked all connections and they are fine. Same thing happen to a laptop I hookup to the monitor. While I check on line there are many suggestions about the problem with the power inverter. Also, there are the following links shown the service manual and a place you can purchase a repair kit.

My question to you all is that; do you think I am looking into the right area for the fixes or should I seek elsewhere? Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Most failure in these VX series are due to bad caps, look at the sub-albums on the right, there are at least 3 versions of this model.

Thanks for those photos; my unit is the one in last set of your photos. VX2235WM-3; model #-VS11446. Since I am not an electronic tech and I am looking for an easy way out. Should I go ahead to replace those caps and take a chance to see will it taken care of my problem? While I was surfing the web I also find a better repair kit for less money.

I have a question about removing the bezel; dose all version of the VX monitors follow the same set of dis-assembly process? Thanks.

"dose all version of the VX monitors follow the same set of dis-assembly process?" Not all.
Do you see any caps with domed tops? Worst case will be bad lamp assembly which will not be easy to repair.

Have not dis-assemble the housing yet so I am not sure any caps have domed out? So, I should follows your instruction for the WM-3 and ply out the speaker grill to starts, yes? If you can be so kind please point me to the right direction to start taking the unit apart? Thanks.

                    budm,

I tried taken off the base and ply on the taps in the bottom of the frame. So far I only have the 3 taps from each sides pop opened. The middle section appears to have screws in the middle holding the frame together. I try removing the base arm but w/o luck. Please any one out there can share some light on this topic so I can take the housing apart? Thanks a bunch!

                    Again I have the VX2235WM-3

                      Re: Viewsonic VX2235WM - blank screen on/off

You will have to remove the base and ALL the screws, I believe there are also two screws at the top left corner and at the top right corner that you will have to remove. You will have to open at the bottom edge first then the left side and the right side, one you get 3 sides loosen up, then you lay it face down on soft surface, you grab the bottom edge, then snap it back to release the top edge, it will pop out. It is kind of hard for me to explain. May be try YOUTUBE.

Thanks for your help. I didn't see the two covers over the neck supporting bracket. Once I pull those out everything is easy.

I checked the pcb and didn't notice any swollen caps. Am I looking the right parts? I can only counted 12 brown caps in the pcb. Any suggestion on what to check next? I have a voltmeter should I be checking for any values between each of those caps? Thanks.

I try to further taking the sheet metal apart but I didn't make it far enough to see the fluorescent tubes. So, I am not sure there is any dimming around the lamps? Here are more pictures of the PCBA. Thanks.

One more item I am not sure I mention it or not. After I notice the black screen; I turn off the monitor and power it back again and then it works for awhile and then went black again. I am not sure this is an indication of something else is wrong! Thanks.

Pardon me for butting in ...

Seems to be another apparent case of 2secs-to-black. Kindly take a peek at the sticky post #19 : https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=10419

                                  1. If you're not equipped to check out the ESR then replace all the secondary caps irregardless. Caps does not have to be swollen/domed to be borked.

                                  2. Look under the PCB for Q905+Q906 and Q911+Q912. These are N channel and P channel mosfets. Test 'em out based on the sticky above. Report result and wait for someone to verify their status.

                                    Re: Viewsonic VX2235WM - blank screen on/off

Okay, this is the newest thread about this monitor that I can find, and this issue is similar to mine. Rather then start another thread, I'll post my issue here.

I have the same model of Viewsonic monitor as the OP. VX2235wm (no letters after the wm)

The issue with this monitor is that it will power on and run happily for about a minute, then it shuts itself off. I can power it back on and it'll run for maybe 30 seconds before shutting off again.

Now, I have a lot of experience in repairing bad caps in monitors and on motherboards. I tested most of the caps on the board despite seeing no bulging or leaking. I noticed that of all caps, the 120uf 400v filter cap was bulging slightly, so I pulled it out and hooked it to my capacitance meter, and it measured a good 20% under spec. So I ordered a Nichicon cap of the same value and put it in. Put it back together and no change.

The only thing I can think of is something is heating up and failing when it gets hot. I haven;t found any bad soldering, and I'm not sure where to look.

If you guys need more info, I'll snap some close up pics of whatever you need photographed.

The power LED, does it look like it goes into standby mode or it actually goes off as if the power switch is activated?
Can you monitor the 5V for the main board to see if it drops out?

Okay lets see here, Can't really monitor any voltage points right now because I have the thing put back together. I have it running right now. Power LED is blue. I'm playing Solitaire to prevent any chance of the PC possibly going to sleep.

Okay, three minutes passed. Picture just went out, LED is still blue. Holding it up to the light, I don't see anything, so I don't think that only the backlight failed.

Turned it off, turned it back on, monitor came on with no delay, and I was able to shut down the computer.
