        Re: tips for buying cases

ratdude: a lot of cheap cases are held together just by the motherboard tray. Since you removed it, no wonder your case fell apart like that. The rivets at the ends are there just so the case doesn't fall apart.
Did you at least gut that case for the switches and LEDs? You could save them and make your own case .

the test to see if a case was good at our store has been for one of us big uglys to sit on it.
if it is still rectangular afterward it passed.
one guy that worked with us is 350++ lbs.
"give it the gene test" CRUNCH!!!!!
i sat on an old enlight case last week to tie my shoe.
            it survived just fine.and i am 285 +-

i remember my powmax frame rocked as the rivets had worn into pivots. when i learned about the dangers of bad cases i promptly stopped using it.

post 1000, had to do it.

on that note, I really like the supermicro pedestal cases on neweggs, especially the ones with 645W lite-on psu's. Too bad they are $300-400.

For that kind of money, the least they could have done is provide the "Antec-style" quick-mount drive clips.

I have two supermicro pedestal server chassis.
They were unused spares, bare-bonez units.
By selling off the brand new supermicro parts I don't want I should break even or make a profit.
[Just the 2 SCSI backplanes one of them has retail for more than I paid for both. Then there's a new 604 board, a new 771 board, and two redundant server PSU's one of which is a 3-in-1 type ~750 watt unit. ]
                                  - In other words the cases themselves are free left overs.
The parts are going 'in' were already paid for and would have gone into some other case anyway so that doesn't really count against them.
                                  .

I also prefer the metal screws to plastic clips.
Heat eventually brittle's the plastic and then they'll snap leaving you waisting you time looking for some proprietary clip that may not even be available anymore.
                                  .

                                      Yes, but they lack APPEAL

You can charge a lot more for "Helical Ridge Fasteners".

Kind of makes you just want to run out and buy some doesn't it?

Especially if they're colored black, blue, yellow, pink or Chrome and have fancy knurled tops.

Those are: "6-32 Tool-Free Anodized (or plated) Helical Ridge Fasteners" and cost $150,000.00 apiece. (special Air Force pricing, in lots of 1,000)

I have seen cheap cases with unshielded front panel USB and audio connecting cables.
They have caused problems with USB 2.0 devices on an external cable.
