Your Water Heater, another place for crap caps to hide

    I have a Lochinvar LNV041 water heater from 2006 with a Honeywell
control for the power vent and the gas valve. The water heater should
    last 10-12 years.

    It was blinking error 84.

The electronics package is a white plastic assembly that is attached with one
screw and two tabs to the gas valve/tank temperature probe assembly. Three connectors to power and sensors easily disconnect.

The connection to the gas valve is three pins that stick out of the valve assembly.

The assembly snaps apart with a screwdriver slid into 5 or 6 locations. Start with the little tab, I think I went clockwise.

Two 330 uF SMD caps marked:

    330
    EHA
    5HD

    Needed to be replaced.

      A fact of life?

When I was a kid water heaters didn't have (or need) microprocessors.

I still think that the control system should outlive the water heater.

Replacing the module is ~ $330 at the appliance parts store in town, or
$800 for the water heater at the trade wholesaler. Probably $1500 delivered and installed if you call the plumber...

      Or $0.45 for two caps...
