    MS-6309 strange behavior!?

    Hi,
I own an MSI 6309 board that started to act strange. It would not boot Win XP nor W2K however it will run 98 with no apperant problems.
In the XP and W2K it always reboots itself when it gets to the welcom screen with the progress bar.
It will even reboot at the same point when trying to install XP and W2k and even if I try to run ERD 2002/2003 from CD.
I have an identical second board and have verified that all components are O.K
On the board there are 5 6.3v 2700uf capcitors 3 of them have those swelling tops but none are cracked or leaking.
All other capacitors are of lower spec. and seem good.

What do you think? Do I have the plague? Should I go ahead and replace the swelly caps?

    Thanks

    Gilli

I second that... If they've vented and are swollen, there's no question whether or not to replace them. You might also consider recapping the second one, it's just a matter of time before the plague hits it as well.. I've recapped many boards that were brand new out of the box just to avoid future problems.

      Good Luck!

Problem is solved! Thanks a million!

        Hi,

I have recaped the board and the problem is solved like magic...
I can run my XP original disk now!
Sorry but I have no means of taking the bad caps pictures.
You should know that most of them looked externally perfect and the 3 which were swollen had only a tiny bulge on top of them. Non of them were leaking.
The conclusion is as you said, even if the caps look o.k that does not mean they function as they are supposed to.
The reason I was able to run Win98 was probably due to the fact that they were not that bad...
I hope my case and its symptoms will contribute for this magnificent site's knowledge base.

        Once agin thanks a lot!

P.s. my bad caps manufacturer is Tayeh

          They are 6.3V 2700uf

Could you tell us the brand that these bad caps are marked with? That's always helpful info for other trying to diagnose their board.

            Glad it worked for ya!
