I have several Diamond Rio PMP300 units and a C64. I'm surprised that they've included the PoqetPC, but not the definitively superior HP 100LX/200LX, of which I have several.

Some of the stuff on the list is certifiable crap, including Iomega Zip drives. Fujitsu Dynamo MO drives are infinitely better - I still buy working MO drives whenever possible.

yeah it wasnt such a great article but brought back a few memories. its a pity it wasnt about greatest inventions.

one thing i didnt know was that m-systems invented the usb flash disk.

Quote:
In September 2000, 14 months after our initial contact with IBM, that company introduced its MemoryKey as the first USB flash drive on the market, based on M-Systems' DiskOnKey technology. The first few thousand units cost $55 to manufacture; we sold them at a $5 loss/unit to IBM.

Our stock price dropped following the press release, but we refused to give up. We managed to trim the unit price and secure profitable margins, aided by the declining flash costs and improved manufacturing techniques. In 2001, our first full year in DiskOnKey production, sales totaled $6 million. Last year, we saw $228 million in sales. This year, sales are up.

That claim is suspect - Lexar had Compact Flash devices (Lexar Jumpshot) with a built-in USB interface a few years earlier. These plugged into a USB->CF adapter that consisted of nothing much more than a CF socket with only a few signal lines connected to the USB cable. With a Lexar CF card plugged into the adapter, the entire combination showed up as a USB storage device.

However, M-systems may have been the first with a USB flash disk in the USB key/dongle form-factor. As I recollect, there were numerous competing devices that showed up almost simultaneously.

Look for a Windows shareware app called "Dreaming of Brazil" - old versions must be around still.
