Help Identify Axial Cap Type SME

I am working on a Peavey Minx 110 bass amp.

The board has a number of 25v / 22uF axial caps with "SME" on the shell. Size is about 11x5mm. None appear damaged.

The remainder of the caps are "IC" for Illinois Capacitor. These are axial type, 35v / 2200uF and 1000uF. None of these appear damaged, either.

I have the datasheets for IC, but cannot for the life of me identify the small SME types.

Anybody?

Also, if anybody has a schematic, would they mind emailing it me?

SME is an older Nippon Chemicon//United Chemicon GP 85C series. Their current GP 85C series is SMG; if you prefer 105C caps, the series would be KMG.

Thanks for the reply... it must be late in Greece... it is 3pm Pacific time here in Kaleeforneea.

The Minx appears to have a bad Volume pot. Turn on the amp, no signal produced until a few twists on this pot. Then it comes to life and works normally.

I've heard talk of cracked PCB, because the board is fixed to the chassis, and jacks/pots are mounted to the (flimsy) front panel and soldered to the board. Inspection with a magnifying glass does not show cracks, but I have not removed the board from the chassis to inspect the trace side.

I emailed Peavey for a schematic, and will probably hear from them about the time that Global Warming cools off. I figured I would re-pot the board, if I have to do one, I'll do them all, considering the age. It is VERY simple to work on, and very clean.

The #3 link shows the light weight (flimsy) metal plate that serves as the chassis. It mounts inside the cabinet where it is protected.

Pete, I thought so too.

The SME/SMG are radial leads. Mine are axial. This is why I'm having a devil of a time identifying them.

I thought I had a 67mm close-up (+1, +3) laying about for the Nikon, but I evidently do not. Have to get one, so I can do closeup pix that are worth a thousand posts...

My daughter (www.aroarah.com) plays a 1985 Marshall JCM-800 that was issued 5 months before she was. It is all point to point wiring, no PCB, and Massive Manly Components.

She had Dr. Rock go through the amp recently. He is the local go-to- whiz tech that all the geetar players use here in Sacramento. His comment was, "wow, a real amp...".

I use the Minx for easy rehearsals, due to light weight. My stage rig is an SWR IOD, bi-amped through Rane signal chain into PLX power amps. Too much to carry for easy stuff.

Sorry about that bg. I'm lysdexic about axial vs. radial. Looks like UCC has gotten out of axial; Nichicon has just one radial series, VX, and I've heard they'd like to discontinue it.

No problem, I always appreciate the input.

Near as I can tell, Illinois Computer (IC) is staying in the axial game. Somebody has to continue making caps for electronics other than system boards.

IC offers at least two lines of axial, 85C and 105C. I noted the load life on 105C is half that of the lower temp line. Makes sense, I suppose.

Traditionally, IC is a decent second-tier company. Their axial caps or Nichicon's VX series should be OK. I wonder if Cornell-Dubilier makes axials, they're a good company.

The girls are doing a showcase on May 18 for RCA Records. They are sending out a decision maker to see them perform, so we have our fingers crossed. The show is already sold out.

Their biggest show to date was playing to 10,000 fans on the bill with My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, and Gnarles Barkley.

All the IC caps look to be in perfect shape. No venting or obvious physical symptoms. I was tempted to replace them all, but don't have a source yet for axials.
