My 22" Mitsubishi 2060u NF, bought used, seven years old, refuses to die and still looks good running at 100 Hertz.
High end CRTs still have fantastic blacks and no native resolution. I wish LCDs didn't have native resolution.

The only advantage I can see in an LCD is weight and power consumption.

We have monitors that are 2850x2850......but they cost $32k.

Well that was just an opinion from my limited observations. I've seen Eizo's in action (my opinion is they have what wealthy people consider quality and are priced to relieve the burden of excess wealth) and my friend has a Hitachi 17" which he paid £369 for, I'm happy to buy shops own brand.

Currently using a HP 19" Widescreen, it was special offer £150, apart from initial panic when the monitor hadn't burnt in/stabalized yet all has been ok/tolerable.

It's true alot of rise and fall times are falsified/technically exploited, a genuine 16ms LCD should be good upto 120FPS easily. I'm aware most 8ms LCD's are more like 40ms.
Have yet to check out 2ms screens but not really bothered, I'd rather spend money elsewhere, I think people who constantly have display issues may have psychological problems that need dealing with, I know someone who constantly buys and returns every new LCD on the market saying they're not as good as some wierd CRT he uses at work. He's like in a constant mindless loop totally wasting his life away.

I totally agree, if only I could find a Eizo 21" F980 CRT monitor, I would buy it straight away!

But seeing as I've bought 3 second hand monitors off the Swedish site blocket, our alternative to eBay. Of which two have failed I'm not sure I'm too inclined to buy another monitor without warranty...

Fizzycapola: Yea sure, the Eizo's are very expensive...
But you also do get very good warranty, 5 years. And the 3 first years are exchange on the place, i.e. if it fails they will drive one out too you... (this might be specific to Eizo Scandinavia, the details on the US site looked different...)

And the build quality is great, we have seen many failed monitors where the reason is bad components, i.e. capacitors etc. Even here on badcaps...

I'm sure the issue is almost as widespread as the PSU issue, it's just that with monitors it is even a bigger hassle to take them apart for the end user to see what is wrong with them...

Every one to their own, but I like to spend allot of money on my monitors. People that complain about headaches and stuff when using computers; that just poor monitors causing it...

Of course you do not need to buy an Eizo to get decent enough quality, there are many brands out there that are ok. But you have to really research it (similar to the PSU issue, how many sites makes decent PSU reviews?)

And this is just my 0.02$ on it

dont really like that idea if a new monitor gets exchanged for a refurb (classic stunt some manufacturers pull these days)

DAMN... now I feel dumb for paying $280 for a used 24" trinitron. Though I love the contrast ratios and freedom of resolution a CRT has. My next monitor will definately be an LCD though, and at least 24 inch.

Did I pay too much for the Sony? It's pretty much mint.

GDM-FW900. I also have the full service manual on PDF that I bought separately, so I can fix it if it breaks, as long as the CRT is still good.

You did ok on that for $280.00, those monitors still have a good resale, and hold their value well.

Ok, so I've had the monitor for almost 3 weeks now

I like it allot, and I have to admit that the colors when gaming look much richer, if they are closer to the way the developer intended or not vs the old Eizo CRT I do not know but I do find it pleasing...

I was a wee bit afraid that this 20" monitor would be a bit small with it's native resolution of 1600x1200 in the desktop when reading text etc but I can now say that I have no problem at all with this. It's viewable size compared to my old CRT is 0.5" larger and unlike it 1600x1200 works just fine with my eyesight

(I used 1280x960 on the CRT)

I've also played some "dark" games on it and it does the darks very well too, have not watched any hi-def movies on it simply because I use my TV for that (but I might just to still my curiosity

)

I don't have a calibrator so I don't know if they are realistic, but as I said stuff looks richer in color compared to the CRT...

verdict on the S1701-SH

viewing angles are poor
top menu slightly darker than status bar (seems like backlighting issue? but also viewing angle)
colour reproduction is rather good for a TN+ but a slight lack of contrast. i needed to give it 10% more contrast in the nvidia drivers before it was where i liked. rather strange.

bright regulator : this function is completely crap, it dims the screen a ridiculous amount. as a result out of the box the screen looks crap until its disabled.

height adjust : it goes surpisingly high.
pivot function is odd because there is no position for the screen to sit back straight.

no dead pixels

I am looking at widescreen LCD monitors, what do you guys think are the best widescreen monitors at the moment (or any hyped models that are about to come out). Specifically around the 19" to 21" size.

Although all monitor related comments will be welcomed!
