Default AMD inside Dell desktops

AMD inside Dell desktops

SAN FRANCISCO — Three months after finally acknowledging that it would roll out new servers based on microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), Dell said Thursday (Aug. 17) will launch its first desktop computers with AMD processors in September.

Dell (Austin, Texas) said it would launch Dimension desktop computers with AMD processors next month and will introduce a two-socket and multi-processor server using AMD Opteron processors by the end of the year.

The embrace of AMD chips in the world's No. 1 PC vendor's desktop systems deals a further blow to Intel Corp., which had been essentially the exclusive supplier of microprocessors to Dell until the May, when, following months of speculation, Dell said it would roll out new servers based AMD's Opteron line of 64-bit processors by the end of this year.

Would that be the 11th Dimension?
Must have a more creative name for a new machine.

Hey, even XPS is recycled...ironically, from old Pentium IIs.

What gets me is that before, Intel had an inefficient processor that put out a LOT of heat without the performance to match. Now that Intel's released a truly competitive product, we're offered a choice. Go figure...

Indeed - how old is that "Dimension" brand name anyway?

My first "real", "very own", computer was a Dell Dimension XP, with a fearsome 80486 CPU @ 66MHz. And that was when I turned 14 in 1993.

A small dose of drivel,

Let us see, 14 carry the 93 add the 06 and 2 = 1 so, your not even 30 yet!

I am a lot older than heat sink dust.
