I think it would be cool to have a Wiki on our site. http://badcaps.net/wiki anyone?
It would probably make sense for only members with 100+ posts to be allowed to make edits or changes, but I think a Wiki is easier to search than a forum for a lot of things. By the way: "Server has been up for 110 Days, 13 Hours, and 5 Minutes" IMPRESSIVE!! Nice job Mr. Chris the Server Admin... Can we aim for 365 days of server uptime??

It would be much better to have a decent wiki explaining components, purpose, and how to troubleshoot, so "WE" members can refer to it and refer new members to it as well. Might be good place to Specifications for capacitors and what they could replace as well as FETs. Basically a datasheet archive. Last edited by Mad_Professor; 04-30-2012 at 06:04 PM.. |

well, i think it had to do with topcat not wanting to bother with the setup... if he did start one i have a couple articles ready for use.

its not so much the setup guys, creating a database and setting it up would be a 10 minute task. My issue is that I don't have the time to put into populating it it....
The longest uptime was 244 days IIRC. I thought about giving it a stir the other day, but never did..... 365...hmmm

Look, I'll host and setup the damn thing if TC doesn't want to - I think it would be an amazing resource that would be highly informative to new members, and a great time-saver for us more knowledgable members

I doubt he would agree to that... he is particular about the usage of the badcaps.net name (hence why the facebook group is clearly marked UNOFFICIAL).

There!
http://shovenose.com/badcapsnetwiki/...itle=Main_Page How about this: we all work on it, then when TC feels like it's good enough I zip up the whole thing and the database and he sticks it on his servers... That way he doesn't end up wasting his time if it flops, while if it's fairly successful it's already started. Good? Good. |

Nahh, I'd rather it all be hosted and created here......avoids some copyright issues. If you guys want to put the effort into it, I'll sure consider it.....but the enthusiasm has a way of diminishing from contributors when it comes time to actually do the work...... |

Come up with a plan....in order for this to even remotely work, it would take a huge amount of organization and thought. I could see it being not much more than a really fancy FAQ....which isn't a bad thing. The capacitor issue already has a Wiki that's quite detailed, so what would this really consist of?

Integrate the dbs so that people with mroe than 100 posts can edit/add content, and give everybody else read-only capabilities. Then, knowledgeable members will create content for stuff they know about. We can have categories, sub-categories, what-not. We can even have a page with a huge table for FETs like Mockingbird was saying |

No, MediaWiki won't do it by default, neither will any other I know of. But it can be easily done!

heeey. Sooo, I was thinking, of making a Motherboard bad caps database where people would list each board, an image of it with the bad caps circled, replacements (lists with links of brands and series of cap brands), and like notes for common problems. Maybe a rating of solderability, recapping difficulty, other possible problems.
this might tone down on alot of "I have this motherboard, with these bad caps, what caps should I use, even though its been posted here and i'm too lazy/stupid to search google and hit bc's threads about it" or maybe a cap db? which caps and links to common good replacements, as well as links to digikey or mouser or here? I have no issues (well I will at first as I haven't done PHP in a long time, but am really good at it and have made some pretty cool and complex stuff before) with making a custom one with mysql and PHP. Easy drop down lists of chipsets, cpus, other things so people can easily select chipsets. But I was also thinking of a tagging system (mentioned below) and thats requires some clientside scripting I am somewhat at a loss with Or if I can find a wiki with image tagging so we can put circles around the caps to replace and what to replace them with and have a fancy mouseover each one I know it would take some SERIOUS doing, as there are so many models with so many hundreds of different caps and cap combinations. Meh, i'm sure rat could do it, he seems to have a lot of time on his hands these days |

Just make it here, so it all in one place.... that was the whole point of this site back in the day...bringing all the info about this that was scattered out everywhere else and putting it in one place... |

I'm still jumbling it around in my head
There are advantages disadvantages to making it custom script/db system, and to making it actually using MediaWiki uploading and annotating images with a few clicks might use some clientside css/html5/javascript that might be a serious pain to integrate. Or, use a edited image with just circles round the problematic caps? of course with a wiki, one member could just update the image over and over. you said above the capacitor issue already has a wiki that is quite detailed, where is this? |
