    Onkyo HT-R591 keeps clicking

Picked up this receiver from Ebay.
It's in new condition, came with all accessories except for the setup mic. All for $75. This is the receiver from the Onkyo HT-S5500 package.
As I plug it in, it begins clicking on and off. Nothing shows on the display.
There is a small power supply board, where the 110V cord goes too, from this board a harness goes to the main transformer and other places as the HDMI board, etc.
On this board there is a small transformer looking relay, which is the one that clicks.
I have measured with an ohm meter the final transistors and I didn't find any of them shorted. Most of the values were over 330k, and some of them around 70k.
There are two rectifier bridges, they look OK too. I have noticed three fuses and they are also OK.
Voltage toward the transformer looks pretty solid, it not getting turned on and off.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
Anybody has a service manual by any chance?

    Found a HT-R590B service manual.
I will have to compare it with my boards though, to see how close are to each other.

That is probably the power relay that supplies the 120V to the primary side of the Main power transformer, that is the typical setup. I will download the service manual and see. It should have big filter caps for the power supply. Do you see any DC voltages on the caps?
On page19 bottom right, you can see small board with small transformer and where the MAIN AC comes in and feed the standby power supply transfromer, the AC output is through the power relay to feed the transformer (TRANS IN).

        Re: Onkyo HT-R591 keeps clicking

It's my first time working on a receiver of this type, so I have to find where are all the components of the power supply. I don't understand why there are two rectifiers, for example.
I have removed the back cover to see better what is where. Which capacitors should I measure, there are two big ones on the main board(amp)?
        I haven't measured much yet.
I have worked on three Harman Kardon AVR1700 receivers a little while ago, but those use the same power supply type as the LCD TVs.
(this is why I haven't had much time measuring on the Sony TV)
        Thank you for helping.

Some pictures with the receiver, front and back view.
It's pretty new and nice receiver.
I own two other models, TX-NR515 and TX-NR609.

There should be one big power rectifier D6901 that supplies +/- voltages for the power amp section, then there should be more rectifier for other lower voltage power supplies. There are 4 secondary windings of the power transformer. There are 9 relays on the main board! see page 7.

I would check the thermal fuse next. It is built into the large mains transformer in series with the primary winding.

Found all those in the schematics, now I just have to get home to find them on the board/transformer and measure them.
Thermal fuse how it should show, if it's bad?

It may be a "BLOWN AMP" that causing. Do you check those output transistors to find if anything shorted?

Yes, I have checked. The lowest resistance that I have measured it was 73 Kohm.

Just check the main power transformer to see if the primary is open, or if it is getting 120Vac. The Thermal fuse is inside the transformer, the transformer temp will have to get about 110~120C before tripping the fuse. By the way, does the front panel light up at all?
Also this amp uses STK Power amp modules.

The relay on that standby power supply board as shown in post 12 diagram is the one that is clicking?

Yes, at least that I have felt. It looks like a small transformer.
I will have to look at it much closer. Late last night I have took the back plate off. I haven't powered it up since. It may be a relay next to that transformer that is clicking and the vibration may transmit over to the transformer.

The only function for that relay is to supply the 120V to the primary side of the Main power transformer. The power on signal is from the main board that send the signal to turn on the relay (just like PS_ON sIgnal for TV, in this case it is the relay driver), this signal should not be pulsing so you need to monitor that signal pin to see if it is steady or not. If you connect pin 1 and pin 4 of the connector as shown in post 12, the relay will be forced on. You can also connect a small 7Watts night lamp at the main power transformer connector to monitor the action of the relay and use it as an indicator.

Have you checked you're getting an output from the transformer? If the thermal fuse is blown you'll have to disassemble the transformer to get to it. To test, volts AC across one coil. For a 50V split supply amp (+/-50V) approx 35VAC should be observed across each main power coil going to the amplifier section.
