30yr. old Tracon Caps (& others)

well... thats what i found in my little brothers amplifier (Elektra Super 50)

well... i'm going to replace all caps. the big fat Tracon in the first and the last 3 pics was completely dead.

look at those 2 short videos..

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=F1MW8m6aHQs

well... the amp was still working, but the balance adjustmend was everything but useful, it fried the power lamp like.. 5 times (overvoltage), sometimes it mixed up the inputs (you selected "Tape 1", but you could hear what's coming into "Aux 1" in the background)..

well.. hope i can get this beast back to life

but anyways: what about the caps? were those Tracons and FDS thingys good or bad caps?

and any suggestions what to replace them with? (I thought about Rubys..)

While on the same subject will someone please tell me why that on older caps (like in the pics here) there is no vent pattern on the tops.

Even though its clearly obvious that there is enough electrolyte to burst the can?

I see this alot in capacitors from the late 70s through the 80s.
Elements of the past and the future combining to make something not quite as good as either.

A tip if not already known. If you have any scratchy/noisy controls place a small drop of 10/20 grade oil on the wipe arm/track inside the control it has worked every time for me. Also has worked well on noisy switches.

Tracon are bad caps. I had to replace a bunch in my old clock radio.

I have just had to replace a Tracon 470uF 10V cap in a Roberts R900 radio. The capacitor had failed short-circuit.
