i wouldnt bother.

if the transistors are being switched full-on using pwm,
then you could use logic-level fets to make a big difference though.

my advice is a bit hardcore - but i'v done it a few times now.

first throw the non-standard cables in the bin.
then get a decent set with shielded 4mm jacks.

then fit 4mm shielded sockets to...

can you trace back where the cap gets it's charge?
this is why i mentioned those 4 resistors - i'v seen resistors in series feeding startup circuits before.

if you buy a modem, DONT BUY A WIN-MODEM.

get one with a real chipset and bios on it.
or better yet, an external modem with a serial port.

both of those options wont need a driver.

do you mean the laptop socket?
i'v never seen one on the charger plug.

maybe it's just a failing led if the laptop runs & charges.
it happens - it's rare, but it used to be pretty common.
