Re: Antec truepower tpq 850w problem?
after testing I think the psu is fine. got a spare computer out of the closet, and it ran just fine.. assuming the motherboard that it was on was the issue. used the multimeter while it was running and the voltages were still the same as above..
thanks guys!

whats the point of pci express 8pin connectors?
i have a powersupply here with 6/8 pin pci express connectors, checking it out. i see that both the additional connectors are simply ground connections. what is the point of that? do they think that the other ground connections are not ample enough?

Antec truepower tpq 850w problem?
this was in my brothers computer, he said he heard a pop sound, followed by smoke and a bad smell..
he found a burnt transistor on his motherboard.
not sure which part was the cause or effect, psu, or motherboard.
so he gave it to me because i have recapped a number of powersupplies in the past and he didnt want to risk loosing another motherboard.
none of the caps appear to be bad, i see no buldging.
i think i am going to have to unsolder some wires to get the main board out so i can give it a good inspection for bad parts.

Re: Soyo SY-P4I875P Dragon 2 - cap questions
hello, figured this thread was ready for hijacking because its 5 years old..
i also have the same board, Soyo Dragon SY-p4I875 Dragon2
the entire row of caps next to the cpu heatsink were buldging, so i replaced all those 11 and the 4 between those and the I/O shield, but i didnt replace any of the others on the board, the 49 or so others i didnt replace. i used Nichicon HM (M) 105c caps.
i didnt read the spec sheet or really know if those caps were suitable replacements or not.
anyways it seems im still...

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
well sofar so good. no other glitches/artifacts.
tried, fear3, crysis, farcry2, got a few hours of playtime, no issues yet. guess i'm going to take it out of my backup machine and into my main rig so i can keep a eye on it.
been saving up for kepler for awhile, im excited

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
ok well its recapped now.. its working.. but i got a few graphical problems in one of the tests in 3dmark 03.
the troll's arm was transparent, and the girl with the sword was flickering.. however all the other tests were fine.. sofar no crashing yet though. scored 30,623. which seems right. i think il find some more difficult tests to try.
il also try a different driver, this one is the driver that came with windows update.

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
yea the caps were buldging. i had a cheap radioshack iron, wouldent heat the solder up enough. i got a weller 8200n now that seems to work well. i got the 470uf caps replaced, but still waiting on the 1500uf caps to arrive.

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
well i couldent heat the solder up hot enough with my iron to remove the caps, so i ordered exact replacements, and bought a new iron, i put it in the oven without removing them. im now just waiting on the 1500uf caps to arrive so i can recap it and give the card a try.
by mistake i ordered the 470uf caps twice, and am waiting on the 1500uf caps to arrive.

Re: where can i buy these caps?
thanks guys!
i don't yet understand what values are considered high or low when reading the specifications so i cant really pick out replacements.

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
ok can you explain solder balls to me please?
at first i interprated what you said as making 4 balls of foil to let the card rest upon to keep the bottom of the card up off of the metal oven rack.. am i supposed to make a bunch of balls ?

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
any chance of components on the bottom of the pcb falling off?
so i put it in a cool oven, than let it preheat to 250c, than once it reaches 250c, i turn it off, open the door and let it cool before moving or touching it. remove the foil, put the caps back on it, than give it a try?

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
After i first tested it and saw the temperatures, so i removed the heatsink and cleaned it in the sink.
than oiled the fan.
reapplied thermal paste.
i know its not overheating.
if i got a wooden clamp and had it squeeze the card, basically try and sandwich the heatsink down to the cpu, might that let me know if it is a bad solder connection under there?
also will 480f melt the plastic dvi connectors? or is that hot hot enough?
i think i want to replace the caps first. and if that doesent...Last edited by aidynphoenix; 02-28-2012, 05:36 AM.

Re: Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
well heat gun seems dangerous to me. i have a heat gun, but how could you be sure you don't let the temp get too high?
oven seems easyier to manage the heat.
would it be a good idea to remove the caps, and then use the oven?
where can i learn about this, when i search for gpu repair/ gpu reflow, ect. i keep coming back to youtube and finding bad advice.

Advice on Recap Geforce 9800gt
got a 9800gt from a guy, he said it would give him the blue screen of death after some use. got the card installed it. it worked fine for about a week, even while maxing out the card in crysis2 and skyrim.
i figured his problems were heat issues because this card reaches 74c easily in my case, and my case has good airflow.
i did remove the heatsink and clean the card well, i removed and put new thermal paste on the card, and its about 4c lower on average now.
but its been working fine for about a week untill now, its making my computer lock up, not getting any blue screen's...

Re: burnt 20+4 pin and +4 pin connectors??
i just upgraded my main computer, got a new processor, motherboard, and ram.
and put my old motherboard cpu, ram into a new case.
old stuff isn't terrible. just not good enough for the new games i want to play.
AMD X2 5000+, AsusM2N sli deluxe mobo, 4GB DDR2-800 ram. 7800gt.
so my 2nd tower will be mainly for data storage.
i will add drives later when i have the money.
this computer i want to feel comfortable leaving on overnight for downloads
so it has to run cool, silent, and...

Re: burnt 20+4 pin and +4 pin connectors??
well went to digikey and added all the caps i would need to my shopping cart.. total was about $20..
if i added alittle more money, i could get a whole new psu..
i think im just going to do that instead of fiddling with this one.
was pondering this one.

Re: burnt 20+4 pin and +4 pin connectors??
well i can completely recap the psu.. was going to do that if i find out the psu is safe to use.. il probably order some neat looking connector kit for the psu so it doesent look all burnt up. il do the wire sleeving so it looks good..
and il try and spend alittle extra for 105c caps so it lasts me awhile.
but other than checking the voltages, any way for me to be sure this psu is safe?
or should i start with the recap?
